Marginal Cord Insertion Check-in

I know there are at least a couple out there like me who will soon be going in to have an ultrasound to check that baby is growing well because of marginal cord insertion. Thought I'd create a place to let people know if growth is behind or on track and if growth needs to be checked again before birth.

Re: Marginal Cord Insertion Check-in

  • We have our appt tomorrow. I'm 28 weeks this week. My weight gain has been steady and my belly is growing and I have felt her being more and more active and have stronger and stronger kicks, so I'm thinking everything is going to be AOK.

I think you had marginal cord insertion as well. Apologies if I'm wrong.
Please chime in with how you and baby are doing.
We didn't end up seeing the dr after the ultrasound today because she was in with another patient who was receiving a troubling report and would likely then be doing a procedure - poor other parents. I should hear by phone call later today though. The tech said things were looking good but waiting for official report from the doctor.
  • I posted this yesterday in the high amnio fluid thread, but I'll post it here too... I just had my sonogram today (28 weeks 3 days) to keep an eye on a marginal placenta (umbilical cord is attached to the side instead of the middle). Baby is measuring 2lbs 10oz, moving a ton, and as far as they can tell developing fine. However, the doctor reviewing the images explained that my amniotic fluid measurement should be around 24 and it was 29. I have been having contractions for the last 8 weeks but my cervix is still long and closed. I did pass my glucose test, but was told today that plenty of people pass the test and can still go on to have GD. So, I have to go back in two weeks where they will measure the fluid levels again. I also have to cut back on carbs and sugar in case I am at risk for GD even though I passed the test. I also still have a few pounds to gain back to reach my pre-pregnancy weight due to my fast metabolism plus the baby's. I was really surprised since I don't have edema, haven't gained a lot of weight, baby is measuring normal, and have been eating healthily. I do have an uncomfortable stretching feeling at night but I really think that's normal for the third trimester. She also told me, of course, to "take it easy".

@maybeyesmaybeno Sorry I didn't see your update on the other post. Glad to hear the cord doesn't seem to be affecting development. Sorry to hear that there are other things to monitor. I'm not familiar with high levels of amnio so I have no idea what potential ramifications are for you. I'll be thinking of you.
  • Hope all went well with the scan @mtusnow.

I will be having a follow up scan tomorrow at 28w 5d to follow up on a low lying placenta and marginal cord insertion found during the A/S.

They are looking for the placenta to have moved. It was the opinion of my OB & MFM (who interpreted the A/S) who think that the way this cord is inserted will be fine. Their interpretation is that we can see more info with technology today, but that info doesn't necessarily mean anything bad.

  • I have had 2 ultrasounds since they told me about this and both show the baby right on track and growing well. Benjamin is estimated at 2 lbs 12 oz. we even saw hair! I'm 28 weeks and will be going back in another 4 weeks. I hope everyone else is doing just as well :)
  • I just had an US last week (25wks) to check on baby. So far everything is ok baby was measuring at 51% percentile. Baby was sitting in there breech. Doctor said if he doesn't flip on his own he wouldn't be comfortable flipping him since I have a Velamentous marginal cord insertion. I don't go in for another US until 32wks. Not really sure what to think at this point I don't want to have a c-section but now I'm just getting flat out scared to delivery vaginally! My mom had a miscarriage and stillbirth and so far I've had a miscarriage. Trying my best to keep positive and not worry but I can't lie I'm a bit nervous!
  • I was told I had this when they did the mid pregnancy scans, doc said that they would do a extra ultra sound at my 28 week check up but didn't say anything about doing it at my last appointment. :(
I'm kinda nervous but not because I'm right on track and have been gaining weight. I hope they still do the scan to make sure. On track or not with growth on the outside it still worries me
  • I am feeling so lost on this pregnancy journey!! So I see the specialist every few weeks on top of my regular Midwife appts. I saw my a Midwife today and I was asking if I'm still able to have a vaginal delivery who would be the one to deliver. She said if there is any question about the cord they would not be the ones to deliver. So I'm thinking why am I still coming here?! I'm like a Velamentous cord is not something that changes right!? She said his report says it's a "probable" velamentous cord. Which is not at all what he made it sound like and I mean it is or isn't. Feeling frustrated with only one doctors opinion. Also how sure are they looking at via US.. Can it be worse or better than what they think they see!?
So many questions! Next specialist appt Sept 10th. I mean delivery is scary enough and I don't even know who's going to be delivering me and via vaginally or c-section. I am such a planner this is throwing me all off balance! :-S
  • Sorry I was visiting family for a couple of weeks and didn't reply. Baby is measuring right around the 50th percentile. I think she was 2 lb 13 oz at 28w3d. Things are looking good. They said I don't need to go back unless my regular OB finds something of concern.

Glad to hear other babies are tracking well for growth @maybeyesmaybeno, @gldnbearz, @JenMark2011.@Jrohrback623, but sorry to hear that some of you are having other things to deal with.

@Klever62, have you called to ask your OB about scheduling another ultrasound. They see a lot of patients and you my have just inadvertently slipped through the cracks because someone forgot to flag something or schedule you or something like that.

  • Glad you got good news, @mtusnow.

My u/s showed that the placenta was now out of the trouble zone and the LO was at the 51st percentile. LO was head down and estimated at 2.5 lb. I don't have to go back unless OB thinks otherwise.
