TTC after 35

Taking a Month Off?

So, AF showed up today. Again. Bloody hell. (Kind of literally.)

Over the last few days, DH and I have had a lot of talks. Basically, he thinks I'm making myself crazy with the OPKs and the drugs and the worry. (Which, yes, is so much like "just relax!" that I briefly wanted to thump him.) I feel like I need a break from the Femara that gives me migraines, the progesterone that blimps me out, and the anticipation followed by disappointment. I also feel like TTC is taking over our lives. We're both sick of compulsory sex and early morning ultrasounds where they basically go, "Yeah, that's a follicle all right! No, we don't know if the drugs did much of anything."

So we're taking a cycle off from TTC. I'm going to focus on enjoying my marriage, working out, applying for jobs, and having fun with what's left of summer. I'll still be around here, I'm sure (my job is super boring), but I probably won't post as much because I won't have as much to say.

Has anyone else taken a break? Did you find it restorative, or did you just feel like you were in limbo?
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....

Re: Taking a Month Off?

  • Have you ever watched the movie "What To Expect When You're Expecting"? There is a couple in that movie that was doing everything in their power to get pregnant and obsessing over it too much to where it stressed them out. They took a month off to just relax, ended up having some wine under a tree and got pregnant. Sometimes...you body & mind just need to destress from the thoughts of TTC for it to do it's magic. Now-- I realize it's just a movie, but I have friends who took time off from TTC and didn't chart/use meds/do anything, and they got their BFP. I am hoping the same happens for you.

Enjoy your time off. Do something for YOU. Enjoy time as a married couple. :)

I will continue to post random non-TTC related things so you can reply and we can still chat...promise! I still have 3.5 weeks until I start trying, so I won't be talking as much about baby stuff, either. ;)

  • Good luck, now get that much needed rest. Hopefully this rejuvenates the reason why and how you & DH fell in love in the first place. Cheers to less stress
  • I think a small part of me is like, "well, if I give up for the month, maybe it'll just happen!" - but I don't think that's productive. Basically, I want to do stuff because it makes me feel good, not because it gets me pregnant. That includes exercise, eating right, and of course the horizontal mambo.

I know a lot of couples have tried harder than us, and for a much longer time, so I also feel like I'm wimping out. But when you need a break, you need a break.

  • Enjoy your break!   (Don't be a stranger, though).

I also have a friend/anecdote who stopped trying and immediately conceived, but I agree with you that a break from TTC where you're half-hoping to get pregnant the whole time isn't really a break at all.  Your plans for your time off sound wonderful, and I hope it's awesome.

I don't think you're wimping out, either.  I'm enjoying my own involuntary hiatus from driving out to the suburbs at the crack of dawn to get probed a few times each week.  Sometimes you just need to focus on life outside of your uterus.  Thanks, cysts!

Rest, relax, take care of yourself, and have fun!

  • It's great that you are first and foremost taking care of you. It makes me sad that TTC can be so mentally and physically brutal for so many.

    Creepy Internet hug to you!
