3rd Trimester

Measuring Small

I went to the doctor today and I'm supposed to be measuring 36 weeks but I'm only measuring 34 weeks. They had me do an ultra sound and said she looked good and said her fluid looked great. She weighs 5.1 pounds. Has anyone experienced this? Am I just going to have a small baby? I've only gained 19 pounds, but I'm a small person so she hasn't seemed too concerned about weight.

With DS, around 36 weeks I started measuring smaller than previous weeks. They did an u/s, he had just dropped into my pelvis more.

They also told me he'd be about 6 pounds at birth, he was actually 8 (7 lbs 15 oz).

I gained 18 pounds total with him.

  • I gained 19 lbs with my son total and he was 7 lbs 1 oz at birth (3 days late).   With DD, I gained only 15 lbs, and she was 5 lbs 10 oz (1 week early).  I had a growth u/s at 32 weeks with each, and it was estimated that both would be around 7 lbs at birth.   From what I've heard, belly measurements can be a little off, depending on the position of the baby at the time, and the practitioner.  My last appt 2 weeks ago, i was measuring 1 week ahead, today I was right on.  My OB wasn't concerned. Babies gain about 1/2 lb weekly the last few weeks so if she was estimated at 5 lbs, than that would be 7 lbs (give or take) at birth.

  • DS measured "small", but my ultra sound did show low fluids.  DS was 6 lbs, 3 oz at birth - on the smaller side of normal, but still normal and healthy.  I wouldn't worry too much about it - if the baby looks healthy, that is what matters. And you still have 6 to 8 weeks for the baby to put on weight.

  • Some babies are smaller and some babies are larger. The scans can be off or they can be dead on.

Don't worry. My DD measured way ahead my entire pregnancy and was exactly as predicted at 10.9 lbs.

This one has measured even bigger at every scan and will likely top 11 lbs. Just because a baby is bigger or smaller does not mean they are going to be unhealthy.

  • It's also important to remember that "your due date" is just an estimate... she could be smaller because your due date is off, which in all reality means your measuring right on schegule... and if your a smaller person maybe the genes just kept going. I am sure she will be absolutly lovely.
  • Hope nobody minds, I'm not on this board, just saw it pop up on the 'latest post' and thought I would respond.  With my first I consistently measured 2 weeks behind, once I was 3 weeks behind.  My MWs said they didn't start to take a closer look until it was more than 2 weeks.  DD was born at 40w3d 21 inches long and 7lb15oz.  With DS I consistently measured 1 week behind sometimes 2 weeks and DS was born at 40w3d 20.5 inches and 8lb12oz.  So no, doesn't necessarily mean you are having a small baby, doesn't necessarily mean anything.  If your provider isn't concerned, you shouldn't be :)
