Phone Calls to the House

crizz13crizz13 member
edited August 2014 in November 2014 Moms
DH and I are currently in an argument about when is too late for his family members to call our house. Unless there is an emergency or urgent issue, I feel like phone calls should be kept to a minimum at night. I realize that many people communicate via text....I'm specifically talking about phone calls to either a land line or cell phone.

SO

When is too late to call?

  • I call my parents anytime until their bedtime so probably 11pm. They can do the same for me. I don't mind.

  • People still have house phones? Screw that shit, my cheap self barely wants to pay for our cell phones.... Seriously though I turn my ringer on silent at 8pm when I start getting DS ready for bed so they can call all they want and talk to my voicemail. Problem Solved.
I have the automatic setting on my cell phone, which is awesome. If I could sneakily do the same to DH's cell and the land line, we'd be golden :-)

  • DH and I generally get in bed around 10 but stay up watching tv for a bit so I voted after 10. Really though no one would call that late unless something was wrong, neither set of parents generally calls any later than 8.

  • People would be hard pressed to find me still awake after 10pm!

  • I voted after 8 because of DS. Although we don't have a house phone so it really isn't a big deal here. DH gets calls all the time.

My phone is set for silent mode from 9:30 pm - 7:00 am. I don't need texts/calls then. If it is an emergency, they can call DH.

  • We don't have a house phone and I rarely get calls later than 6 or 7 anyway. Usually if it's after that it's an emergency. But if I don't want to talk then I just won't answer so it doesn't really matter what time anyone calls
  • I turn the world off at 8, unless it's one of our parents or an elder in the family. Then of course we answer because, well, we love them. Lol It is very rare that our family calls after 8 pm, though. Friends and other family know I am nesting and recharging in the evenings and they are welcome to text.
  • I voted after 10 because I usually don't call my parents after 10, but DH and his dad both work nights so we will call his parents later times.

  • If you have young kids in the house, after 8pm is too late. Otherwise, after 9 is too late.

  • My husband doesn't get off work til midnight. We don't have a landline. We get calls at all different times, but mostly everybody we know texts. Husband's dad has the same schedule as he does. sometimes they call each other when they get off work. I don't care. It's like once every couple weeks. I'm usually asleep. Phones are usually on vibrate most of the time. Doesn't wake up me or our daughter or cut into our time with my husband and he usually has short convos anyway. Neither one of us talk on the phone much. If it was constant and my husband were on the phone all the time during time we'd usually have together I'd definitely be annoyed and try to put a limit on it.

  • I answered for family & people I am close to.  I think 10PM for them.  However, a business better not call me past 8!  I don't get many stupid business calls any more, but when we had a house phone, nothing would infuriate me more than useless business calls coming in at 9 pm!

to call me on my cell if you are my mother, brother, sister, grandmother, aunt or 2 best friends. If you are anyone else then please don't ever call me, just text me.
I live in NY and everyone I listed is in SF. If I am awake at 11:30 PM I don't mind talking to my family, it's only 8:30 for them. I couldn't even tell you what my landline number is, I just have it in case of emergencies.

  • There really is no such thing as late for us either.  My DH doesn't get home until 11:30pm anyway and I'm usually up until 12, sometimes 1.  My family is pretty much night owls as well, so sometimes I'll call my mom after 1130 or she'll call me.  They usually don't call later than that though.  My friends don't call that late but they would text me first before they called.

  • Thanks for all your responses, ladies! My "rule" growing up was no phone calls past 9pm. DH's family operates on the "never too late to call" rule. We've lived together for almost 5 years, so I've just dealt with it....but I am thinking of putting my foot down once this little person arrives! We live in a 750sq ft apartment, so it's not like he can go somewhere else to talk!!
