Pets and baby

Since I've been getting ready for baby I've been looking at her stuff and trying to figure out how everything works, I've noticed that my dog Charlie, keeps trying to steal her toys for himself! I tell him no and then turn around and see him grab something else that is shiny and he likes. Or if it's too big he'll start barking at it especially at night (like the crib and the changing table) How do you get dogs to stop running away with baby toys and get them used to it without having to put things away.. I'm almost 30weeks and I'm too tired to put things to the side or put them away lol

Re: Pets and baby

  • We are going to keep baby toys in a covered container as much as we can. (Mostly to keep dog hair off of them). I'm assuming that he will still snatch her toys, but telling him no should fix that. I also plan on not letting my daughter play with his toys.

I don't have a dog, but I have a good friend whose dog steals and chews her kids' toys whenever he can. I think all you can do is train them to "leave it," and definitely be good about picking up toys before you leave a room.

ETA: it can also help to have a special place for keeping your pup's toys (like a basket or bin), where he can go get them out as he pleases. Maybe next to his crate (his "den") or next to his bed.

  • Our dog is a puppy so we're still training him and we are working on getting him to understand what he can and can't have.  He has started leaving our older son's toys alone in the past week or so, which gives me hope that he'll be less interested in the baby's toys.   I plan to put the baby's toys in our pack n play whenever the dog is out b/c the baby won't be on the floor playing at the same time.  We're also working on getting him to stay off of the furniture so we have those places as "safe" spaces for baby stuff.  I've had more than one friend need to replace Sophie the Giraffe after the dog thought it was a dog toy- so watch out with that one and toys that are similar!

  • Yup--lots of Drop it! And Leave it! And then I go grab one of his toys for him to chew on.

Shocking that a dog would believe that essentially a $25 dog squeaky is in fact a human teething toy. (I love Sophie)

  • We just have to watch the dogs at all times. We try to clean up toys as much as possible but my dogs like to eat new things all the time. Their newest addiction is sidewalk chalk, crayons and my 2 year old's train tracks.
  • We have baby girls stuff in he nursery with the door shut for now. Whenever we are in there working on something, the dogs are interested but when we say 'no' or 'leave it' they back away.

  • I am trying to limit the amount of time the dog is in LO room. I plan on putting a bed for her to know her place when she goes in there and we star to arrange things. Other then that it will be a lot of drop it and replace with one of her toys.
