Baby Hates His Swing

Anyone else dealing with a LO that hates swinging/baby wearing? I have a Graco swing that's borrowed from my brother's LO, who LOVED it.  Elias will sit in it for maybe 2 minutes tops, then the tears happen, like it's the worst thing to ever happen to him. (Maybe it is.  He's still little!)  He also doesn't seem to be a fan of baby wearing...I've tried both a Baby Bjorn and a Bobacarrier and after maybe 5 minutes, that's enough of that.

Any tips to get him used to them/like them?  Everyone else so far seems to have babies that are receptive to fun things like this.  I wish I could do something else with him besides put him in his bassinet when I need to get something done that requires two hands.

Re: Baby Hates His Swing

  • Try different speeds on the swing? I also find that I have to stay moving for DD to be happy in the carrier.
  • We tried the slowest setting and he was not happy. He could deal with it on the off setting for 5 minutes. He loves to be rocked and moved in my or DH's arms, though!

  • My firstborn detested being worn, and didn't tolerate the swing for more than a few minutes at a time. My second LO ADORES the swing. We haven't tried baby wearing with her yet

  • Lullabies while in the swing? I usually do my white noise app.

  • Some babies just don't like those things.  You can keep trying--my baby seems to be more OK with the swing and the Ergo now that he's a little older--he did not like them when he was brand new.  My daughter was a huge swing hater though, and would never tolerate it for more than a few minutes.

  • DD1 detested the swing.  So far dd2 tolerates it but only one of the fastest settings.  By far the best way to get her to calm down is by swaddling and white noise when she first shows signs of being drowsy and putting her in her crib.

My DS hates the swing. I've found that he'll sleep in it though, however he has to be completely out before I can put him in it.
  • If the bassinet is working, I'd not fret about the other things not working (well the swing anyway).

  • Ds2 hates the swing. Lasts maybe 5 mins if not less before he starts screaming. Ds1 absolutely loved the swing, so I'm having a hard time with this. If I need to do something, I'll put him in they rock n play or the bouncer, which he seems to tolerate. I'd try the swing again in a couple weeks to see if he'll want to swing in it.

  • My LO hated the swing at first. But, at about 7 weeks, I walked in to the living room, where the swing is, and DH had her swinging away, with her perfectly content. Maybe allowing your LO to age a bit and try it again?

Mine had a big startle reflex to begin with and every little breeze would cause it. The swing created a breeze all around her. At least that's my thought on why she hated it.
  • My kid seems to hate the swing.

And will only be content in the bouncer for like 5 min unless she's asleep.

    Also, doesn't like her bassinet.

    I haven't tried baby wearing.

If you figure out something I'd love to hear it.

Mine hated all things until she was about 3 weeks. Then she started to love her swing. Not always, but she has at least one swing session a day and is content. The bouncer she hated until just this week. I think she just needed to get a little bit older.

  • Thanks for all the replies! Glad to hear my little guy isn't alone in not being a fan of his swing. I think I'll try to give him some time to grow and mature and see if he likes it in a few weeks. Guess I should be glad he'll hang out in his bassinet.

  • DD is the opposite here. The only time she's happy is in the swing. I feel like a horrible mom that just lets her kid swing away for hours on end. Unfortunately she cries pretty much any other time:/

  • Mine loathes the carrier. She screams as soon as she starts being put in it and won't stop until she's out again (would love if anyone has any tips on this!) but she adores her swing. One thing I noticed is she seems to prefer the swing when the mobile and light are on (it has a moving mobile and a light with stars that turns) so maybe that's part of it
  • DS hates the swing, bouncy chair, basinet... Basically everything :) I can put him in the rock n play if he is drowsy. I found that he will tolerate the bouncy chair for about 5 min if he's really happy when I put him in and I stay close (which defeats the purpose of having a place for baby to sit...). I give him a little time in it each morning when his mood is best and hope it'll grow on him as he becomes more independent. He sleeps great in the K'tan carrier, but he has to be drowsy or alseep when I put him in. He just loves to move too much to tolerate being wrapped up! I'm thinking once he has neck control, he'll like the carrier more but well see! Good luck!

  • DD doesn't like the swing, so I borrowed a bouncy chair from a friend and she definitely prefers it. I've only worn her twice, and she wasn't a fan. I'm going to keep pushing babywearing though because I need my hands free as much as possible as a SAHM to a toddler as well.

  • DD isn't a fan of her mamaroo. We keep trying and hopefully she will come around at some point!

  • Mine will only be happy in the swing when he is sleeping. If you put him in it while he is awake, he'll freak the fuck out.

oh and the swing has to move from left to right.

  • She doesn't like the swing or rock n okay. Her favorite spots are the couch and the crib. Loves to be worn in the moby, ring sling or ergo.
  • DD isn't a fan of her mamaroo. We keep trying and hopefully she will come around at some point!

We bought a mamaroo as well and it didn't move quickly enough for our LO. We sold it on craigslist and bought a swing that she loves.

  • My guy likes his swing but it can't swing left to right. It has to swing the other way...back and forth?
It was a saving grace last night! He slept in it almost all night. Wasn't happy in his crib, so the swing it was!
  • So small update...someone mentioned their LO likes the contrast of TV, and it reminded me Elias loves to stare out the window. I turned his swing to look out the window and he hung out there for about 10 minutes! Guess we have to take literal baby steps for now!

Our swing does both and we found in the beginning she liked back and forth much better so we haven't moved it since. I'm not sure if I want to try the other way or not, now. Don't want to ruin the happy baby we have now with it.

  • My LO wasn't thrilled with the swing we bought. I tried it a bunch of times and while she wouldn't scream when she was in it, it didn't do much to soothe her either. So we splurged on a mamaRoo and thank the dear lord she's obsessed with it! So the swing is getting stored in the basement for future babies and mamaRoo it is! My husband also loves it bc it doesn't take up as much room. Also the RnP is a fav as well. We seriously take it everywhere.
  • My boy hated his swing up until this week. Now loves it!
