Glucose test

So tomorrow is the day I have my test, I am nervous. I hate blood work and reading about everyones expierences with it I get more nervous. My dr never gave me any real instructions. I know I am suppose to vast but I am not sure how long before. And is it really that bad?? I know the drink sucks but they dont take that much blood and its only one hour. Someone calm a nervous woman down haha.

Re: Glucose test

  • I wasn't told to fast with my 1 hour test. Try to avoid having a carbohydrate heavy breakfast, though.

The drink isn't that bad. It tastes like Gatorade syrup or something, orange flavoured. I always have trouble with getting blood drawn, so I knew that going in, but they eventually found a good vein and all was fine.

Don't over worry about it. You drink this drink, wait and hour and then give some blood :)

    Take lots of deep breaths

  • I didn't eat for 15 hours before my 1 hour test and it completely skewed my results.  Make sure you call your doc to confirm whether or not you are supposed to fast.

Also, I didn't mind the drink at all; I was able to chug the 1 hour and 3 hour concoctions without a problem.  I had 3 additional vials of blood taken with the 1 hour because my MFM also runs vaccine titers, CBC and a few other tests.  It's really not a big deal.

Even if your doctor is on vacation, one of the nurses or even the receptionist should know the test protocol.  Just call.

  • I didn't fast before any of the 3 glucose tests I've had-all one hour. I was told I could eat much just try to stay away from carbs/fruits as they could skew my results. So I had two eggs and half a piece of toast each time I think. And milk or water.
So I would definitely call and ask.

It really isn't that bad though. I mean it's not my most favorite drink but I don't mind it that much.

  • The drink was honestly not bad. I was terribly nervous about drinking it, I have a really hard time drinking things that taste bad. It tasted like flat orange soda or orange Gatorade. I set a timer to make it a challenge for myself- mindgames. :) my test was at 1, I drank the stuff at noon, and had to fast from 11-12. So I ate a normal breakfast, and an early lunch. The blood test was fine. I think it was 1 small tube (not full all the way) for the glucose test, 1 for a full pregnancy blood panel (which may not be something your ob does), and 1 for my thyroid (which is messed up, you won't need this)

Hang in there. I promise that the anxiety is worse than the actual test. Good luck.

Yes this will totally mess it up, even GD we are not supposed to go over 8-10hrs because your body rebounds.

And on another note, Id avoid cereal , fruit or heavy sugar, most everything else eat in portion or serving size. It is usually servings that get people on numbers. I mean I can eat 1 serving of blueberries and a cup yogurt and my number is fine. If I eat say 2 servings of blueberries and yogurt then I might be over. When I did my test last two pregnancies I was told to eat normal and fast 1 hr before drinking the stuff.
  • I did mine a few weeks ago and it wasn't a big deal- my lab happened to have orange and fruit punch flavored drink.  The fruit punch tasted like kool aid that was made with extra sugar.  They should be offering it to you cold, which helps make it easier to drink (you only get 5 min to drink it so be ready especially if you are someone who drinks things slowly like I am).

I'd call and ask your doctor's nurse if you should fast.  Most, if not all, of the moms that I know IRL have not had to fast for the one hour test.  I agree that you'll want to avoid eating carbs and other high sugar foods before hand so you can help keep your number in the normal range.  I tried to avoid sugary stuff starting the day before, but idk that it really made a difference.  I ate eggs and had a cup of coffee with cream before I took mine and it was fine (my number actually was super low).

Good luck!  There are much worse things that I can think of doing than the glucose test.

  • I didn't have to fast and my Dr told me to eat protein before the test. I had eggs and water. The drink isn't bad. It's come a LONG way in recent years.
  • As others have already said, call the office to confirm if you need to fast.  With DS1 I was told to fast, but this time around I was told to have a no-carb breakfast, so I had scrambled eggs and some water.
I thought the drink was delicious.  I had the fruit punch kind. :)

  • See I was told to fast for 12 hours before my test and then I had to wait even longer bc they didn't have my orders I had to wait another hour and 45 minutes.

So in total I actually fasted over 14 hours.  I failed the 2 hour test but it was because I do have gestational diabietes.  My daily blood test are proof of that.

Call the doctor's office or the lab for more clear  instructions.  The drink took me 5 seconds to chug (I was so thirsty) and the draws weren't bad.  I am pretty sure it is a lot easier than actually giving birth so just suck it up (I mean that in a nice way, I had to do the same as I have passed out numerous times from giving blood samples).

  • Sitting in the doctor's office now for my 3-hr test.  :-/

For my 1-hr test, I was just told to have a no-carb breakfast and drink the drink an hour before the appointment. Once I drank the drink, I couldn't have anything else (no water, no food) until after the appointment.

  • I had mine last week. I was told that fasting would alter the results and you should be eating normal. The OB just suggested that I don't eat anything sugary that morning.
