Babies: 0 - 3 Months

10 week old only takes 2-3 oz

I have 10 week old twins. One takes 5-6oz every 3 hours, the other only takes 2-3oz every 3 hours. We have tried different formulas and many different bottles and nipples. He screams and arches his back while eating. His eyes seem to squint with agony with every suck. It's terrible! I have also tried gas drops. He is not constipated or overly gassy. He has an appointment next week with the pediatrician. I know he is not gaining weight (he feels light as a feather). Does anyone else have a 10 week old that is only taking 2-3 oz?

  • I agree it sounds like reflux.  DS has reflux and it was horrible when he was that little.  He was BF but could only eat a small amount at a time and then ate more frequently.  He was given Zantac which didn't help and then switched to Prevacid which has helped hugely.

Get your LO into the Pedi today do not wait till next week.  Reflux is incredibly painful so please do not make him wait.  Your pedi will probably prescribe a different formula and maybe medicine.  Good luck!

  • DD had a dairy allergy and had reflux and that is exactly how she acted.  We wound up on neocate and that made all the difference.  We still used gas drops etc but her eating habits increased much better after the formula switch. Hope your LO starts feeling better.
