IUD's

I am new to the whole IUD thing. I am meeting my new gyno (totally distraught over my gyno who delivered LO has left the insurance network) next week and am so confused at this point which to do. Please enlighten me on what your experience has been with them. I have super bad menstrual headaches, periods that are super heavy and clotty and really bad PMS since having LO. I was taking sprintec BCP. It made me super bitchy and can't remember to take it at all, even setting an alarm on my phone didnt' work. I really like the idea of switching it out every 5yrs and not worrying about a BCP, plus insurance covers 100%, bonus!!

  • What do you mean confused at what to do? Like stretching?

I didn't have a great experience once I stopped breast feeding, the hormones were too much for me (I had the Mirena). I got mine removed and while I am back to crippling periods, I have lost almost 15 lbs and am back to my sunshine personality

I know there is some discrepancy about the Mirena v Paragard. Also, like you mentioned the weight issue, I am no "skinny minnie" to begin with anyhow. However, I've had several people state that the mirena didn't make them gain and it was all just a fluke.

  • I wouldn't say it made me gain, but it didn't help me lose. Seriously, without it I can cut calories and work out (the old fashioned way) and I will lose weight like normal. With the Mirena I could go for days without eating and the scale wouldn't budge. I gained weight because it was extremely discouraging to put in the work and not see the reward so I was like "eff it"

But mostly, the hormones made me feel distant from my family which I hated. But everyone responds to hormones differently

    Thanks. Good to know.

  • Which IUD are you looking at?  Something like the Mirena might help you with those sorts of sympotoms, whereas a a copper IUD might make some of them worse.

The only ones I know of are the Paraguard(copper one I believe) and the Mirena. The paraguard in hormone free, but not sure if it'll assist with my symptom concerns.

  • I had the Mirena between Aiden and Quinn.  The insertion SUCKED (but that's likely because I had a csection and never dilated so my cervix wasn't erm...welcoming lol).  But I had non existent periods and no side effects.

  • I had paragard inserted and it hurt like a bitch and then it never stopped hurting. I hate to scare you but I had terrible cramps(way worse that period cramps) for 3+ weeks. I went in and she said it may not be placed well and she could adjust it. I asked her to place it in the trash and felt immediate relief. With that being said mirena is supposed to lessen period symptoms but some people have bad experiences. G/L
