Vinny is now 14mo and 6days. He's walking, screeching, babbling with inflection and discovering the world. He does say ma-ma, ba-ba, da-da, but nothing of meaning. He doesn't direct words to us but just says them at random. He used to say hi but doesn't anymore. However he does have conversations while playing with his toys or pushing his walking around or eating. I can't make out any vocabulary that he's saying but I know it's there.
I know plenty of people who's children are speaking already and they are younger. We also tried to implement sign language but it's not coming to him. They do it at daycare too so they try it too.
Is this "normal" for a boy his age? When do they generally start talking?

Mine doesn't say anything either. He only says dada and random sounds. He is very active, walking, climbing, and playing and doesn't have much interest in words yet.

If your ped isn't worried than don't be worried. The range for "normal" is huge right now. Lo doesn't say anything really but his brother didn't until 15 months either and he has been speaking in full sentences ever since. I believe it's more important that they seem to understand what you are aaying and asking, rather than just parroting things back right now.

I do this for our visits because it can be hard for me to think of examples in the office during a short visit after LO has been trying to escape the exam room for half an hour.

No pointing or waving or anything like that. He's pretty much going nonstop playing and babbling constantly from the time he opens his eyes til they close.

I was worried because L wasn't saying much either, but her comprehension is huge comparatively. She's almost at the two step command which is an 18 mo milestone. It surprised me (I didn't know this, someone told me). Now she's suddenly non stop noise, trying to figure out words. She didn't babble at.all until she was 11 months old.

He does understand when we talk to him or say "no Vinny" "stop Vinny"

Q says mama and can say up if prompted. He babbles and used tone and inflection but no real words. He understands very well and can follow commands/requests/instructions.

Ds1 never said much until he was 2. Then he started speaking in complete complex sentences. I was a little worried but our ped, who is dh's best friend, told me that he doesn't recommend any child for speech therapy until after the age of 2 because kids who don't say much tend to take off once they hit 2. He said that he is more concerned with comprehension. If the child understand what you are saying that is important.

DD says "uh oh" and "all done" on a regular basis. She can also say mama and dada but more infrequently. She is working on "bubbles" right now...she said it yesterday and a few days earlier.

She def understand us a lot of the time. For example, my DH can say to me "give me a kiss" and she will blow him a kiss. Or she will shake her head no at appropriate times. Or she will wave bye at appropriate times (showing she understands from language that we are leaving).

Before she had her adenoids out last month I was getting worried because literally the only thing she said all.day.long was "dada dada dadadada". She called everything she saw dada. I really wonder if getting her enlarged adenoids out improved her hearing or something. I guess I'll never know?

There is def a huge range of normal so I don't think your LO is behind at all!

Thank you everyone for your advice/input. It calmed my nerves a LOT. I know you shouldn't compare children and all, but I am sure you all know how challenging it can be at times. 

My niece is SO ADVANCED (doc even says) and then my nephew is WAY BEHIND barely saying a word and if he does you can't understand. Its hard to "gage" what a "normal" child should be doing. I get overly paranoid. Thanks again.

DD also has no words and I am a little worried because she has always been behind on social/cognitive skills. She does show understanding (with funny things like brushing her hair when we tell her to). Unfortunately she is not great at communicating with us, she doesn't point, and just whines a lot. I appreciate what PP have said about their toddler and am trying not to worry as much.

Yes, vinny fusses a lot and no pointing, waving, etc. He does babble like crazy and carries on "conversations". He understands when we say "don't do that" or "close the door" "open the door" "come here" etc. He will do them and follow through.

A is 13 mo and only says mama, dada, ball, dog, and milk or something close to milk. She babbles a lot while crawling, "reading" and playing but nothing we can understand. She understands us though as far as asking her to go get a specific toy, hand us something etc. I've heard it can sometimes be one of those things that just happens overnight so I keep telling myself that bc I worry too.

My LO still isn't speaking. Our doc said not to worry so I'm trying not to. I work on words everyday with him and am waiting for the day he repeats them back.
