Excessive Spit-up: what to do

I am going to call the pediatricians office on Monday but in the meantime, I'm hoping someone can provide some helpful info.

For the past few days, LO has been having excessive spit-up. For example, last night she ate 4oz at 6:30pm. She woke up at 3am and I figured she was hungry since it had been so long. I fed her 2oz and burped her. She spit-up all 2pz she had eaten. After that, she had no interest in finishing the bottle. I put her back to bed and she was fine.
She woke up at 5:45am and after changing her and sitting with her for a while, she fussed and so I figured she was hungry. She ate 4oz and do not spit-up at all. (Finished eating that bottle at 7) At 10:30, she seemed to be hungry (spitting out her pacifier and fussing - she was dry and otherwise fine.) I fed her 2oz, which she spit-up immediately. So I stopped the bottle and again, she was fine. She took her usual 2.5 hour nap.
When she woke from that at 2:00pm, I changed her diaper, hung out for a few minutes and prepared a bottle. She ate all 4oz and was fine, no spit-up.
Just now, at 6:45pm, after changing her diaper, giving her a bath, and spitting out her pacifier, I thought she might be hungry. I prepared a 4oz bottle and started feeding her. I wanted to avoid spit-up so I planed to burp her every oz. At the first burp (after 1oz), she spit it all up. I continued and the same thing happened. Basically, she didn't eat anything.
I'm concerned that she's going to be hungry but don't know what's causing the spit-up and also don't know how to avoid it. I haven switched her formula at all... Any insights / suggestions??

(Thanks for reading the long post)

Re: Excessive Spit-up: what to do

  • Our LO has the same issue. I try not to overfeed him; I also try to burp as well as I can (scary though because I worry he will spit up more); I keep him upright for awhile, etc. And then I have a burp cloth and bib ready for the inevitable! Curious if anyone had any other suggestions on things to try?

  • I don't know that it's the entire 2oz but it's a lot and seems like it's the majority of what's she's eaten. She's happy and seems content so maybe I'm just over-analyzing and worrying too much.

  • The pediatrician filled up a cup with an oz of water and poured it out onto a towel. When she did that I realized that there was no way she was spitting up even 1/4 of an oz. 1/8 was enough that it would have soaked through any clothes she was wearing and a full oz would have drenched her and myself and anything near us.

I worried a lot too, but after the demonstration I felt a lot better.
  • If she is keeping some down you are good. We we having this problem I thought too. We talked to our pedi and she said that we were overfeeding. So I start with 2 oz and then give 2 more if he is still hungry but never more. He hasn't finished the 4 oz since then because I watch for any sign he might be full and if he isn't crying for it (ie a paci will suffice) he doesn't get it. He is still spitting up a decent amount but I know he is doing fine gaining weight and it's really pretty normal for babies to spit up unfortunately.
  • It's good that you called the ped; for us our LO was vomiting and spitting up, as well as not gaining weight. She is a reflux baby :(

However, before we went in for the vomiting reason, our ped told us that babies will spit up what is excess. Their stomachs take in what is needed, and spit up what they don't. It could just be as simple as your LO didn't need what she was eating.

Being with my LO rocks! DD born 6/13/14.
