NTTCR: Internet Question

DH and I are moving to a small town that doesn't offer cable internet or good DSL. We have the option of Verizon with speeds up to 3mbps, or satellite internet (similar to 4G through Dish). In your opinion which would be better? Does anyone have experience using these? Is that enough to stream video with (my guess is no but I had to ask)?

Re: NTTCR: Internet Question

  • DH and I live in the middle of nowhere, and we used Verizon internet for a while.  I don't know what speed, but it was the cheapest they have.  It was fast enough to stream, but we couldn't use the netlix on our ps3 and stream something on the computer at the same time.  Their customer service was also terrible.  Sometimes the internet just wouldn't work for hours, and when we'd call all we could get was "did you unplug it for 30 sec and plug it back in"?  Of course we did bitch, can you give me some real help?!  It was really frustrating at times.  We finally eventually got frustrated and got something different.  I wouldn't really recommend them to anyone, but if you have limited choices it does work.

No cable or DSL.  Where the heck are you going?  No advice, just being nosy.  Hope your move goes smoothly.
We live in a small city right now (about 100,000), but are moving to the next town over with about 10,000 people. We currently have all sorts of options, it's sort of shocking to me that a town only seven miles away doesn't even have a cable provider (just satellite).

  • I live in the sticks and we use a company called intelliwave. They offer wireless type internet. Try googling them, see what they call them selves and see if a similar comapny is in your area. I feel ya on the crappy internet situation!!

Thanks.Verizon unfortunately seems to be our only option. We looked further into Dish and they don't offer enough data in their plans for our needs. As long as I can get on TB I'll be okay. DH may be a little disappointed since he likes to play Titan Fall and stream on Netflix. He'll have more time on his hands to help around the house ;)

  • rslh10 Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it looks like that company only services a very specific area around Ohio.
Melody*W* Throttling would be an issue if we went with Dish (one more reason to not go with them). It's good to know we won't need the internet to be too fast for my husband to enjoy his video games.
