broken collarbone/clavicle

So last night my DD, who is 2, fell out of her bed and broke her clavicle bone.  Poor little thing is in so much pain.  After spending almost 5 hours at the pediatrician /radiology lab/ orthopedic doctor with my DD and my DS, who is only two weeks old, they said it was clean break and should heal in four weeks.  However, the orthopedic doctor said if she were older they would give her a sling, but since she is two they don't deal with it and it's a choking hazard.  He said I could I put on a t-shirt and then put on a second t-shirt as a sling, but he didn't show me how to do it even though I asked him to and I feel like I have no clue what to do. Has anyone done this or dealt with this?

Re: broken collarbone/clavicle

  • I plan on going back tomorrow with t-shirts so he can show me!  The orthopedic had left the office for the night when I had called the office.  I feel so bad because she keeps accidentally moving her arm and crying!  It is so heartbreaking!!!!

  • This really surprises me. I broke both my collarbones one at age 8 and the other at age 12. I couldn't imagine not having a sling. When I had my sling off to change or shower, ect, the weight of my arm alone made it so painful! I hope you get the t-shirt thing figured out so your poor little one can be comfortable.
  • I just saw the date on this post. I didn't realize I'd browsed so far back. Your LO is probably almost healed by now. I hope everything went well!
