My mom just found my old baptism gown and it is yellowed and stained in a few places. I'd love to use it for my DD next month but have no idea of how to go about cleaning it. Anyone have any luck with any home remedies or mail-away services? Thx!!
Contact a seamstress that specializes in wedding gowns. The woman who did my gown alterations also did custom gowns & was very knowledgeable about thus issue. It was common for her to adapt bride's mother's wedding dress and some had obviously yellowed. I do remember her soaking one in woollight. My family baptism gown us now ivory and I actually liked that and choose not to clean it for my kids but it had no stains.
I soaked the family baptism gown in borax for thirty minutes and that really seemed to help with reduce the yellowing. After I rinsed it, I just hung it up to dry on a drying rack. It made a huge difference IMO. We sent it to the dry cleaners after to see if there was anything else that they could do.
I think between the borax and the dry cleaner that it really helped decrease the yellow due to aging. It looked more of an ivory type color when it was all said and done.
My mom brought ours to the dry cleaner as well. And we'll just have to deal with it being a bit on the ivory side. I don't know if there is much you can do. Maybe soak it in oxiclean in your sink and rinse out in the shower.
I washed on gentle and dried outside in the sun. I really had no expectations whatsoever and was pleasantly surprised! The yellow completely disappeared.
Re: anyone have luck cleaning old baptism gown?
@*LrCg* - I washed it in woolite on Saturday on gentle cycle and a lot of the yellow came out actually, but there are still a couple spots....
@foreverapartofme - Did the dry cleaner have any luck getting more yellow out than you got with the borax?
