DS diagnosed with ADHD

Hi there!  I've been around the board before for several issues over the years.  My b/g twins were born prematurely.  They had severe reflux, and were diagnosed with RAD (reactive airway disease) at 10 mo old.  DS also has metatarus adductus which required a cast and a orthopedic boot for a while as an infant.  The kids are 8 now and entering 3rd grade next week.

DS was recently Dx with ADHD (inattentive type) by a pyschiatrist.  We had been seeing a social worker for family therapy with DS and she referred us to the pyschiatrist.  After discussing it with the dr, and talking to my friend who is a PhD in pediatric neuropyschology, we decided to try medication.  He's been on generic concerta for about a month or so now.  It's helped him to stay on task much easier and deal with frustrations better.  I kind of feel bad saying it, but he's been easier to parent while on meds.  He still seems to have issue with blurting at times though.  I've explained that the medicine isn't going to "fix" it 100%, that he still has to do his best to stop.  He has a hx of migraines, but thankfully, hasn't had any issue with headaches and the meds.  DS still sleeps which was my other concern.  His appetite is somewhat decreased, but he's not lost any weight yet.

We saw the pyschiatrist this week for a follow-up and she mentioned that he may need more meds during the school year.  She gave me paperwork for his teachers to fill out in a few weeks to better help us evaluate how he's doing in school.  Overall, I'm not shocked about the Dx.  Everyone on DH's side (both parents and both brothers) have some form of ADHD.  I'm happy he's responded well to the medication without side effects to date and I'm hopeful that he'll be better focused and on task for the upcoming school year.

  • @-auntie-  Although I think you're untaggable.  :)

I was planning on waiting a few weeks before giving the teachers their sheet to fill out.  By the time we meet with the dr again, it will be about a month into school so it will certainly provide some insight.  I don't mind if we have to increase his meds, but wonder if we do, will the side effects be more likely to show up?  I also worry about blunting his personality with a med increase.

  • Hi! DD1 was diagnosed with ADHD-Inattentive-type when she turned five. We don't use meds at this time. DD has some accommodations in place, and she's being followed by the CST at our school, so we meet regularly to monitor things.

I'm glad you're having success with the meds you've tried.  Welcome back!
  • Hello :)

DS has been dx'd with ADHD, combined (moderate). It seems as though I, as well as DH have a version of it too, however we have remained un-dx'd as well as un-medicated.

Ive had to find/learn ways to stay organized, because keeping organized isn't my norm. I'm glad DS has a DX, so he can have accommodations in school, that I may have benefited from too had I was dx'd.

I'm glad you have a treatment in place!

  • Hi again : ) My first son has been diagnosed with ADHD combined/mild and GAD NOS (anxiety). He was diagnosed at the end of KG. He had a really rough year. Due to anxiety and my brothers past dependence on stimulants ( ie his adderall), we've elected for a non stimulant but haven't started yet. I'm just not sure about it and we are way off schedule during the summer and DH is on the medication bandwagon.
