I need some awesome sewing investigative skills. I'm having an issue with Rosie's costume request. She wants a rainbow dash dress. I found one that is gorgeous and I want to make it similarly. She only give the tutorial for the back of the dress and says you can put it on whatever dress you find. So, I need help finding a dress pattern that is similarly cute, fluffy, and cupcake like as this one: https://www.sewchibi.com/2012/08/the-rainbow-dash-dress.html.

Nana are you able to draft and or combine patterns using a tutorial, or do you need a legit pattern to follow to the letter .

I just need a pattern for the dress. The tail and wings actually have their own pattern and tutorial on that blog. I can have my grandma help me combine the two. She's way better at drafting and combining things than I am. I just need to find some sort of dress pattern/tutorial that looks like that dress or similar.

Yeah, that's what I'm asking, like if I find a tutorial for how to draft a pattern for the bodice and a separate one to draft for the skirt would you be able to piece the two together? Or are you looking for an actual pattern to buy that's similar to the dress pictured? And wouldn't be drafting your own pattern at all.

Whichever. I can do either a purchased dress or a tutorial. Though I prefer tutorials that also have PDF patterns or printables. I can work around it though.

Today A was jumping and dancing all over the room saying 'I'm gonna do this forever!' It was amazing. I wish I had half the energy this kid does.

Hey, ITK. How about this pattern. I add the "tail" portion of the original dress and find a way to alter the wings to fit. Then stick a pettiskirt under it?

Looks good to me! I would just cut the wings, sew them down on the shoulder blade area facing the wrong way toward each other, then fold back over and top stitch them the right way, encasing the raw ends. Same concept as a French seam, you know?

Sort of. I think I've only done a french seam once, but I'm sure I can figure it out. I figured out how to make that pettiskirt be rainbow on the bottom. So it'll be lots of rainbow going on. I'm going to make her 2 of them to make the cost of the chiffon be worth it. What type of fabric would you make the bottom of the skirt out of to sort of match the chiffon? Than maybe satin for the bodice and wings?

I personally would do a satin lined skirt with some poly organza over the top to mimic the feel the first dress has. It's sheer, but not as drapey as chiffon is. Fabric.com I'm pretty sure has a lot of poly organzas for curtains that are slightly iridescent which would make it more fun and ethereal, and they're super cheap. Hell you could even just go check out your local stores for some premade sheer curtains to match the color you want. Then I think a plain satin bodice would be great, but the wings I would (<-- uhh autocorrect for some reason changed to 'I ovulate' wtf) not do just satin. Satin is way too drapey, and the wings will sag and not look like wings. You might want to get a felt or something, and you can either get a matching colored felt, or get similar colored felt and cover it with fabric.

Yeah, the wings would need some serious reinforcing. Maybe doing some felt with some interfacing in it for the center of the wings. Just to give it some strength. Something along those lines. I kind of dig the organza idea. I was looking at their aqua dress fabrics today at Joanns. They had a pretty sheer organza that looks similar to the satin I'm thinking of. However, I will have to see how they match once I get the chiffon in. I don't want it to be too busy.
