GD or Gestational Diabetes is one of the more common issues with pregnancy. I'm a type 1 diabetic myself but I hang out with a bunch of GD mommies to be at diabetes clinic I go to. Have you been referred to a GD clinic or an endocrinologist? Education is key to being on top of GD and the sooner you can get the experts helping you out the better.
Don't know how much you know about diabetes so please don't be offended but I wanted to make sure I covered the basics. GD results from your body not using the insulin it produces effectively. Insulin which is produced in your pancreas is a hormone that allows glucose to pass from your blood stream in to your cells where it is used as fuel. Too little insulin and your blood sugar level is too high. Too much insulin and your blood sugar drops too low.
Most of the time GD is managed with diet and exercise. Oral meds (pills) and insulin (injections) may be added as time goes on in the pregnancy as your body will build up more of an insulin resistance as the pregnancy goes on.
In pregnancy the placenta can cause the onset of insulin resistance which in turn will trigger GD in some women. Other factors can impact your body's insulin resistance as well such as excess weight (fat blocks insulin absorbtion), ethnic background (they don't really know why but certain ethnic groups have a much higher rate of diabetes then others), and other medical conditions (PCOS for example can impact how your body absorbs insulin).
It can be a lot of info to take in but it is totally managable and there are lots of nice GD mommies on the board here who I am sure will be more than happy to lend support and provide advice. Medical professionals are probably actually able to give you a much better overview of GD but I figured I would chime in with the basics.
