Coughing violently while pregnant

Hi ladies.
I'm new, I'm currently 11 weeks tomorrow and for the last week I've had a server violent cough that hurts my stomach and throat to cough and I cough up yellow plem.
My question is because this is hurting my stkmach so much is it hurting my baby? Please help very scared and worried :-(

Re: Coughing violently while pregnant

  • I do not see how it could affect the baby.  You are not going to cough up your baby ;-)  I know the feeling of being scared.  During my first pregnancy, I once had a few episodes of horrible stomach pains/bowel problems that made me feel like I was dying and had me worried about the baby.  But these are different bodily systems, and they shouldn't affect each other.  Plenty of women throw up severely and have stomach pain during pregnancy, and it doesn't affect baby.  Sorry you are in pain, but I wouldn't be worried.  Hope you get over your cough soon!

  • I have a chronic cough so I go through that too. It shouldn't affect your baby. Get some cough drops and sit in a steamy bathroom with the shower running. It helps A LOT!

oh and make sure you wear panty liners... if the cough continues, you might start noticing a leaky bladder :/

  • You should still talk to your doctor about it. But I also agree with both PPs
  • I have had a bad cough too, I do get pains but I think it is RLP because it goes away quickly. I would say talk to your OB, I am planning to do so at my next appt.

  • If your coughing up yellow phlem thats the only thing thats concerning that you should talk to a doctor about... definitely a cough supressant if not an antibiotic as well.. the baby should be fine.. a cough wont hurt it.

  • I was also going to warn about bladder leakage. So much fun.

I third this, mainly because I peed all over myself a couple nights ago which led to a speedy exit.

  • With DD #2 I had a persistent cough that wouldn't go away but no other symptoms. Turns out I had aspirated fluid into my lungs from the reflux/heartburn I had at night and had to get a prescription for something that would dry it up. I'd definitely call your doctor if it lasts much longer. But the act of coughing itself had no negative implications for DD. Good luck!
