Neuro consult update

Whew. Huge sigh of a relief came from our appt today.

We were referred to the neurology bc of concerns that were expressed by EI at DS's last eval re: his poor balance and coordination when walking. Of course my brain went to worst case scenario.

The neurologist did a full exam and said nothing looked particularly concerning to her from a neurological standpoint. She didnt even want to venture into doing an MRI / CT scan bc there wasn't enough to concern her.

She did say that shes not fully convinced that he doesnt need tubes (and neither am I, TBH). So she suggested we get a 2nd opinion from another ENT. In the meantime, we're trying some allergy meds bc he's always pulling at his ears, always congested and stuffed up, and he has a mild expressive language delay, which all points to ear issues (or possibly allergies). She also thinks the congestion could be contributing to his balance issues.

If we strike out with the ENT and no issues are found again, she brought up the possibility of the poor balance/coordination being due to Developmental Coordination Disorder, which can cause extreme clumsiness and some motor/speech delays in kids, and tends to run in families. The therapist we're working with at EI also said there is a possibilty of it being sensory-related.

So either way, I'm relieved. Based on his recent PT eval, he qualifies for weekly pt/ot to work on the balance/coordination stuff. And in the meantime, we'll be getting a second opinion from ENT to see if there's a link there. ::sigh:: I feel like I'll sleep much better tonight.

Woohoo!!! Have you had a hearing test done?

We had one done a while back at 15 1/2 months, but due to his age, they had to use the speakers instead of headphones so the results weren't as accurate as they probably would be if they used headphones. But they did indicate normal hearing. He does respond when called and turns his head when he hears noises as well. But hes still always tugging at his ears. But every timw they check his ears they say there's no fluid. Frustrating.

  • @threelittlewheels‌ I am unfamiliar with your backstory (refresh my memory), but best of luck to you and your LO too! I think the most frustrating/nerve wracking part is the waiting for appts and trying to rule things out one category at a time.

But yes, I'm glad we've got our EI services in place and I'm hoping its something that will be corrected in time with a little help from EI.

  • That is great news!  I'll be praying for you as you go to the ENT.  Please keep us posted with those results.  Blessings to you!
  • @threelittlewheels‌ ugh..sorry to hear your LO is struggling. Are you involved with your local Early Intervention team? At least this way he can get involved with some therapy in the mean time. FX that he gets the help he needs to thrive and you get some answers soon.

I will say, thus far, DS has loved his sessions with the EI team and he absolutely adores them! I'm pro therapy of any sort bc its proven...it works! :)
