IUGR at 28 weeks

Hi everyone. I'm 41 and this is my first pregnancy. Had my first biophysical yesterday and while baby had been measuring fine (have had 6 us due to high-risk) now her head and stomache measurements are 2-3 weeks behind & I have low amniotic fluid. Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with this? I'm getting excellent care from the hospital but I'd love to hear from other moms who have been or are currently going thru this. Tia!

Re: IUGR at 28 weeks

  • I lost identical twin girls last August to SIUGR (the same thing as IUGR just for twins) at 20 weeks.

The good news is that you have made it 28 weeks. Lots of important things happen in the 24-28 week time frame that greatly increase the baby's chances. The chances of a happy result are much higher the later IUGR develops. With IUGR you are usually in for ultrasounds possibly as much as every week and also careful monitoring of the cord blood flow. If the cord blood flow starts to become irregular they will likely give you a big dose of steroids and deliver you via emergency c-section. You are typically asked to not travel anywhere that doesn't have a level 3 nicu in case you have to deliver really early.

I hope this helps and please don't hesitate to PM me.

  • I haven't been diagnosed as IUGR yet but at my 27 week ultrasound my LO was measuring in the 9th percentile. I have another growth scan next week at 31 weeks and in the meantime I have had to go in for weekly bpps. So far everything has looked good as far as amniotic fluid levels, cord blood flow and movement. I was told that they would induce me if she seemed distressed or stopped growing but that hasn't been the case yet.

  • My DS was diagnosed IUGR at 24 weeks. He measured consistently around 7th percentile and was born at 37 weeks via early induction, weighing 5lbs 1oz. He's still a little guy, but 100% healthy and happy.

DS' diagnosis was unexplained. We never figured out why he measured small. My fluid levels were always within the normal range too.

Have you been told what additional testing or monitoring they plan to send you for? Did they say whether LO appeared otherwise healthy, or have any explanation for you as to why she might be little?

I know how scary this is and wanted to share ((hugs)) and Ts&Ps. If you have any questions for me or just need someone to talk to, feel free to PM me anytime.

    Grow, baby, grow!!
