Cloth Diapering

Fit question

According to the cotton babies website, freetimes are supposed to fit 8-16 lbs on the smallest rise, 17-22 lbs on the second rise, and 23-35 lbs on the largest (unsnapped) rise. I know those are just generic, and every baby is different.

We moved L up to the second rise a couple months ago, and I feel like we need to move her up to the largest rise already. But she is only 8 months old, and about 16 lbs! According to the website, she should still be on the smallest.

I'm attaching a picture, so maybe you can weigh in if we need to go up a rise or not. And if you remember, when did you go to unsnapped rise?

I'm afraid we're going to outgrow the rise on our diapers before she PTs! (The freetimes are running out first, but most of our covers are not too far behind)

Re: Fit question

  • Don't panic!  It's fairly normal to have to go up in rise before they start walking, and then go back down as they slim down around a year to 15 months.

G had super chunky thighs and is in th 70% for height.  We went to the middle rise around 3-3.5 months and the tallest rise around 9 months, then back down around 13-14 months, and around 19 months we went back up the to the tallest rise.

There are some diapers that won't make it to PL'ing for us because of a short rise though.  Best Bottoms, Grovia Shells, and RaR pockets will probably only make it a couple more months in our house. =(  (He's 22 months.)

  • I think where you have the rise now looks good. I can't tell where her belly button is though, which is what I use to judge by. Personal preference, but I like the diaper to be just at or slightly below the belly button.

I tend to increase the rise when the snaps feel like they are pulling on his hips and not at his waist anymore. My LO is 12 mo 17lbs and on the middle rise for BGs and has been for a while. Probably, like you, right around 8 months and 14-15 lbs.

No experience with this, but I have heard that as they get closer to PL the diapers tend to fit more like underwear, and not as close to the belly button, so you should be okay.

  • Thanks! I knew it was common to slim down when they start walking, but I thought that would only affect the wing snaps, I didn't realize it could also affect the rise.

It's actually very close/slightly over her belly button, but whenever we put the diapers on, they keep unsnapping and we have to snap it back down. That's why I was thinking its time to go up.

She's really small - at her 6 mo she was 22nd percentile for weight and 25th percentile for height. (So, long for her weight.)
  • The fit changes as they get bigger, but try watching this video about fit. I know multiple people who have gone down a rise snap after watching it, some two rise snaps!

  • My daughter has always been in the 20 percentile.

We had to do the same for her.  At around 9-10 months we had the diapers unsnapped all the way for both her Freetimes and 4.0.   At around 12-15 months we snapped them back to the lower rise.  And now finally at 2 1/2 we've had to unsnap them.

Just watch for leg gaps and butt cracks.  That's usually how I could tell we needed an adjustment.

  • Yep, my small guy has chunky thighs and we were all the way unsnapped around 7 month. But around 12 month we moved back down to the middle rise snaps.
