Cat

Just got a cat should I be ok? I have been around cats my whole life and with my first pregnancy.

Re: Cat

  • Cats and babies have coexisted for a long time.  Not much to worry about.

The fear with cats and babies is more or less an old wives tale that cats will cuddle with the baby and suffocate them. While I am not sure how often this actually happens, it is probably something to look out for if you have a cat that likes to cuddle. Most people report that their cat wants nothing to do with the baby.

Also, I have known a small number of families that had to rehome their cat after the baby came along due to the baby having allergies. But that isn't a problem with most people.

  • You, the baby, and the cat will be fine. I'm not sure why you wouldn't be ok since you had a cat during your first pregnancy.
  • Is your fear of toxoplasmosis? If so, then the main way to avoid it is to stay away from the litter box. Make your SO handle it, and you should be fine.

  • Cats are only dangerous during pregnancy if you get the fecal matter in your mouth. Practice good hygiene and have your SO clean the litter box. You'll be fine :)

While having a cat is fine during prenancy, I am a little confused as to why you didn't check BEFORE you got a cat. What if the answer was no?
I would limit my contact with the cat until it's seen a vet to be dewormed etc, because it seems pretty likely it was a free cat, as a rescue, etc would have already answered this for you.

    Congrats on the kitty.
  • I have two cats.

The only post prenancy/baby difference is that we keep our cats out of our daughter's room while she sleeps. At first it was because they're 15+lbs and snugglers and I didn't want them deciding to snuggle/smother my newborn (they love to cuddle faces especially) and now that she's older and in a big girl bed, she's used to sleeping with the door to her bedroom closed and that keeps her in her room at night.

You can scoop the box, FFS. Just don't eat the poop & it's fine.
This. I despise the spread of misinformation. You can only contract toxoplasmosis if it's ingested, and it can only be ingested if the cat sheds it. The risk is only for those who have indoor and outdoor cats where the cats eat animals that are infected. If you have an indoor-only cat then it is non-issue. Seriously. I have two cats. I've had cats during all of my pregnancies, and I never abstained from cleaning the litter box.

If you have indoor and outdoor cats then follow basic hygiene practices. Use gloves when cleaning the litter box and wash your hands. Simple.

  • Well, this is the weirdest question I have seen yet today...

I think this is the weirdest question I've seen in a while.  I read it and... I just... I....

I just don't know how to explain how confused her question made me.  Got a cat?  Is cat ok? Have cats changed? Cat?

Maybe we're missing something. Does the cat have rabies? Are you severely allergic to cats. OP?
Maybe the cat has baby rabies.

  • I work as a veterinary assistant and I handle cats and litter every day. Just use good hygiene when around the cat and its box. I use gloves when cleaning cages and wash hands frequently. Is there is something about your particular cat we're missing? If its aggressive I wonder why you got it in the first place considering children...but other than that? Cats are fine.
