WCM safety guidelines

I can't figure out a way to word this into a proper question for Google so here goes. Is it ok to offer cold WCM to LO, put it back in the fridge after a few sips, and then offer it again after maybe 2 hours. Possibly trying this a few times with the milk in an insulated sippy and only out a few minutes at a time.

I can't find safety guidelines for cold milk. We aren't dealing with the hour limit after LO touches it like with BM and formula, are we?

Thanks!

Re: WCM safety guidelines

  • Huh. Good question.

After a google search I found other forums where people asked that question and most of the responses were it's fine as long as it's not out longer than an hour and you get rid of it at the end of the day.

I guess I'd probably do the same thing. Maybe ask her pedi?

  • Thanks ladies! It seemed ok to me too, just checking.
  • I think it's fine in the fridge since bacteria grow very slowly at that temperature.  Do a smell check if it's been several hours just in case.

  • Ya I'm totally lax on the whole hour thing. If it's cool to the touch, I use it. If it's room temp I toss. I use the same sippy all day, putting it in the fridge between uses. I keep it out for a bit so he can drink from it as he wants too.

Same here. I get out a new sippy in the morning and fill it w milk. It gets refilled as needed and goes in the fridge in between meals. Whatever is left at the end of the day gets dumped.

  • Yeah unlike BM most WCM is pasteurized so unless you're getting it right from the cow (in which case you prob live on a farm and LO has a rocking immune system anyway) it should be fine.

  • I have read that after a year you can be more relaxed about tossing food and drinks after the hour. If he only has a few spoonfuls of food, I will put it back the fridge for later.

I think I may be the only one who hasn't introduced WCM yet. I'm such a scaredy cat :(

Not the only one! I haven't yet. I'm not entirely sure when I'll start. He turned 1 on the 1st. We are still nursing throughout the day (and of course at night too. Probably til he's 12 ;)) so I'm in no rush

  • Ya know, that question never crossed my mind. My son essentially chugs milk so we've never had any left. Alexis is just starting out and it's mixed with her BM  and she chugs that.
We are going super slow with the introduction. She's getting 1 oz a day for a few days, then 2 oz etc. I'll still nurse her when we're together, but I'm ready to be done pumping so she'll switch to cow's milk at grandma's.

I intro'd cows milk a while ago, but we still nurse. Like everything else, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. If you're over nursing, that's one thing, but don't feel like you have to "wean to WCM". You can easily do both.

This.  Think of WCM as just another drink/snack option or if you've been giving formula, sub in WCM for that.  You don't have to replace nursing with it unless you want to wean/cut down on nursing.
