"Why we don't like sleep training" articles

The topic of sleep training comes up a lot starting around this time, so I'm sharing a couple of short articles I bookmarked back when DS was a baby. I found them interesting and thought provoking, and they helped ease my mind anytime someone would question my choice to continue "allowing" him to take a bottle in the MOTN.

  • FTR I am absolutely and categorically not opposed to CIO. It's awesome and worked very well for my family. Just not when my baby was still a newborn.
I'm opposed to any CIO method that advocates disregarding a child's needs or not bothering to assess those needs in the first place. Some of the sleep books have good, practical advice; unfortunately, too many parents ignore the practical parts and misinterpret the rest as "just let them cry." To steal a line from this article, "while [I] do let [my] kids cry, [I] don’t allow [my] kids to cry without responding to them."

Same. There is a time and a place for it. It works well with some children and not with others.
