2nd Trimester

Haven't felt "quickening" yet and getting anxious

I'm 16 weeks 5 days with my first pregnancy.  I've been reading a little too much in the pregnancy books.  Haven't felt "quickening" yet and getting anxious.  I'm a little overweight, but not by much. Today I'm 5'3" weighing 174 pounds.  So I'm wondeering, when did you ladies first feel those precious kicks for the first time?

Re: Haven't felt "quickening" yet and getting anxious

  • You are still early. I started feeling DS at 18-19 weeks. This baby I barely felt until 20+ weeks due to partially anterior placenta.

Some women don't feel baby until 25 weeks.

  • I started feeling what felt like just gas AT 19 weeks, and maybe around 22 weeks when I realized it was baby movement thats when I figured out I had been feeling movement for awhile but didn't know thats what it was. now J is 10 weeks old and when I feel gas bubbles I think it's the baby kicking still... lol

  • I would say you are really early based on everything I've read. If you are really concerned, you may rent one of those dopplers so you can hear the heartbeat. I'm sure everything is fine!

I am one of those woman who is now 22 weeks and have only maybe started to feel any kicking in the past week (agree with PP who said it feels sort of like gas, I think it is probably kicking as it's started happening more regularly...or my intestinal tract is breaking down :p).  I had a perfectly normal extensive 20 week anatomy scan two weeks ago and the doctor used the doppler to reassure me that everything is perfect yesterday-- so definitely don't panic at 16 weeks!

  • Sorry you're feeling anxious OP, but as the others have said, first time mothers don't typically begin feeling the baby until a little later.  With DD, I didn't have any distinct movements until around 22 weeks.  With DS, I think I felt him around the middle of week 18.  With #3, I'm sort of feeling flutters at week 17, but I kind of think it's all in my head.

You'll be feeling movement soon enough.

  • I felt some vibrations/popcorn popping around 17ish weeks but I only just started feeling distinctive kicks the past 2-3 weeks.  You're still early!

  • I think I was past 20 weeks with both my kids before I felt any kicking or fluttering.  Just wait it out... so long as everything is fine at the doctor's, I wouldn't worry.  :)

  • I was about 21-22 weeks when I started feeling movement for the first time. At 24 weeks was the first time I was able to feel it from the outside - and that was just 1 eventful morning. It was about 1.5 weeks later before the 2nd time I was able to feel kicks from the outside.

  • I didn't feel anything until 19ish weeks. You're still early. Give it time.
  • I've started to feel baby move the last couple of days.  Last pregnancy I was well in to 21 weeks before I felt baby.  I was nervous, too.  On the anatomy scan we saw her kicking away and I felt nothing.  The culprit- an anterior placenta which cushioned much of the movements until she was a bit bigger.

I know it is tough to wait - but it will be worth all the wait once you feel those initial flutters which quickly turn in to kicks :)

  • I felt the same way, I get it.

I wasn't sure of what I was feeling until week 18...I am 21 weeks 5 days now and even though I've felt her quite a bit in the last couple weeks, there are still whole days where I hardly feel her at all. Sometimes she's active sometimes she's not. Makes me feel so anxious too when I go a while without feeling her, but supposedly that is normal too.

Apparently their movements aren't considered consistent until 28 weeks+, so we both have a while to wait for that!

  • I am 16w5d with my first and have not felt anything yet either. 5'0 and 136lbs so a little over weight as well. I was told from my OB between 16-20w. Soon, we will feel it soon! Happy waiting. :)

  • I am 19 weeks and FTM. No movement yet that I notice. I read it takes longer for FTM so I won't worry unless I get past 20 weeks. I plan on asking my OB tomorrow what they think.

  • When I went in at 16 weeks, my doctor asked if I felt movement and I said no. He said, "good, you're not crazy." So I'd say that you are probably fine. I haven't felt anything yet, either, and I'm at 19 weeks. I'm trying to be patient!

This made me laugh.  I definitely heard women saying they felt movement before 16 weeks and mentioned it to my doctor-- he said he was deeply skeptical of anybody who claimed to feel movement in the first trimester.

  • I felt my first at 16 weeks, but only light flutters until 18 weeks. Everyone is different, and there's a wide range of what is average for feeling movement.

You know I was just thinking if that could also cause you not to feel anything. I'm at 21 weeks and I don't know that I've felt anyting at all. However like someone else mentioned on the US I see baby's hands and feet move alot so I know she's okay. Last US I found out about Placenta Previa so I was curious if that can hinder movements.

I do think I felt something though when I layed down for my nap yesterday, felt kinda flippy thing in my stomach.

As a follow-up to my original post re: feeling literally nothing I thought was movement before 21 weeks, just a few days later I now pretty consistently feel movement several times a day which i only recognize as kicking because it happens a few times in a row in the same place--- otherwise I'd probably think I'd started having gastro-intestinal spams. :p

I know some people (most people?) love feeling kicks, but I say enjoy the abdominal tranquility while it lasts, it can change in a moment. :)

  • I didn't start feeling anything for sure until weeks 18-19. Try not to feel anxious.
