Hi Moms, lurker here, occasional poster.  I am on an extended maternity leave due to some health issues with my baby. he is Ok now but it was a rough start. I have a phone interview today, i scheduled it at a time he usually naps. Of course he decides today is the day for a new schedule. I doubt he will be napping at the time of the phone call. what do i do? Tell the person I have my baby here in case you hear baby sounds? reschedule? I cant leave him alone in another room, he will cry.

UPDATE: DH is going to stay here for the interview! yeah!

is there anyone that can come over and watch him for an hour while you are on the phone? does he like the stroller? can you put him in the stroller and take the call while you are on a walk?

otherwise i think you need to reschedule.

  • I wouldn't reschedule. Is there anyone you can call to come over and sit with babe while you talk on the phone? If not then I would put babe in a bouncer/vibrating seat and move LO so that they can see you but so that you aren't on top of them. Or if you have a clinger (like mine) I would wear baby if that's what tends to keep them quiet.

I am assuming that your interviewer knows you are on maternity leave?
  • Dang, I would have arranged a sitter just in case. But too late now, I guess? Is there anyway you could do the interview with headphones while you walk the baby in a stroller?
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

    My Charts since 2009

  • The stroller is a brillent suggestion!

I think i will make all future interview when DH is home so I can avoid this issue in the future.

I agree with above: find someone to sit with him while you are on the phone, or put him in a bouncer a comfortable distance away from the phone.  I wouldn't babywear in case he starts to cry loudly.

Do you have a headset (like the iPhone headphones with the mic on the wire)?  I find those tend to drown out the background noise better than using the regular phone mic.

    ETA: good luck!

I'm probably the odd one out here, but as far as him crying if you leave him alone, are you more concerned about them possibly hearing him cry, or just the fact that he might cry?

If it's the later, I would just let him cry. My kid cries. I can't keep her from crying, and I don't think it's going to scar her for life if I let her cry for 30 minutes, as long as I know she's dry, warm (not too warm in summer!), fed, hydrated, and in a situation where she won't hurt herself. If I were in your circumstances, I'd put her in her crib or PNP with some toys in the back of the house and close all the doors in between. I'm not sure your circumstances with your son, since you mentioned health issues, so this may not be an option, but I wouldn't rule it out if it's not.
I dont want the interviewer to hear him cry and i cant let him cry. I have done CIo sleep training but that was teach him to sleep. to just leave him a room alone and ignore him because I have something to do doesn't feel right to me.
I am in a new state and no family around. i have one friend but she is sick. he is always quiet in the stroller. Ill take him for a stroller ride. I have bluetooth headphones. this should be OK.
    Thanks everyone.
