Cloth Diapering

Diaper Service Question

Hello all,

Has anyone used a cloth diapering service? Do they just use the prefolds and cotton covers?

Re: Diaper Service Question

  • I used a cloth diaper service for the first 14 months.  You won't get a lot of support on this board, but I think if it's what keeps you out of disposables, then go for it.

Most do only use pre-folds.  They don't usually provide covers (covers aren't cotton, BTW), those are yours to buy and wash.  Mine had a package, though, where they gave us 4 newborn covers when we started the service.  We had to buy more than that, of course.

I will say, while I don't regret using one, it's really not hard to do the wash yourself. And this is coming from someone who works full time, my kid is in daycare, is in CD full time and whose husband works 12 hours shifts.

Not trying to promote my blog, but I did just update the cloth diapering post and it details our experience with the diaper service.

  • Depends on the service. The usual is pre folds or fitteds and you buy your own covers snappis wet bags etc.

Some will provide wet bags a pail or wipes for an added cost. But prices and what's in the package vary between services. You'll have to Google them in your area to compare :)
  • In my area most provide sized fitteds but one does prefolds. You have to buy and launder your own covers. Most do provide cloth wipes for an additional cost (about $2 per week) and give you a pail with a wet bag liner that your diapers are dropped off in and then returned in.
Prices will vary by area. In my area $20 a week is average.

  • @cedenton‌ makes it sound like we have something against diaper services.

While most of us wash our own diapers, I think that the services are great.

The service in my area does prefolds only. You have the option to rent PUL covers for $1 each per week, or buy your own. She also rents other accessories by the week, like snappis and cloth wipes.

I think that there are other services that have more options, like flats and fitteds, but to my knowledge there aren't any that do "modern" diapers like AIOs and pockets.

  • I've never used a service, there are none in my area. But from what I looked at most do prefolds or flats and may provide a cover or two. You will get all the support you want or need from this forum. Even if you have someone else do the dirty work, it's likely you will still have questions and we are here to help. Laundering your diapers is only one part of CDing. Questions you may have that we will be able to help with are fit, brands, cd safe diaper creams, rashes, emotional support. We are generally always available for fun, and even the randominternet stranger hug. Beware we may convert you to diapers that diaper services do not provide, in which case we WILL do our best to convince you to BUY ALL THE DIAPERS!

Well, I just meant that no one here is going to say to use a diaper service as their first option.  People are going to tell them how washing is easy (just like I did :) ) and give them a million pieces of advice for how to not use a service, which is fine and has probably saved a lot of people a lot of money.

As far as I can tell the general consensus on the board regarding a diaper service is that it's a waste of money and people who use them are silly, wasteful and maybe even lazy, unless they have no other option (like live somewhere without access to laundry).  I'm not saying that anyone has ever even said that or it's what everyone thinks, but in the past that has been the tone of the board regarding diaper services.

    Flame away!
  • Oh, and this is spoken from someone who you all had a hand in converting from a service to washing my own and I'm glad you did.  It really is not that hard (or at least it hasn't been for us) and has allowed us to use a lot less sposies.

You all have been very supportive with questions as I transitioned and I have always appreciated that.

True that you are going I be told how easy it is to wash your own diapers, but I don't think anyone is going to think you are wasteful or lazy. It certainly isn't the "general consensus".
Maybe it was just me projecting my own insecurities, then. :)
  • Thank you for all your responses. Im not sold one way or the other about the diapering service. Just in research mode. But I would definitely appreciate any advice you all have on cd. Brands, costs, pros, cons anything you want to contribute...

Lol, we could all talk your ear off with advice. We do better with specific questions. Have you read the FAQs?

  • I would check into your local diaper service. In my area there is a diaper service that does prefolds, AI2s, or pockets, and you can choose a specific brand or mix of diapers from the list of brands they have.

They also have a stripping option and a few other options for intermittent use without signing up for weeks of service.

That being said, as was mentioned it isn't all that hard to wash diapers. My husband was pretty adamant at the beginning that "there would be no poop in the washing machine" so we looked into the services pretty thoroughly. In the end he realized that washing diapers was not the only time poop was in the washer...

  • When my brother was a baby we had a diaper service. It was prefolds only. We had to buy/wash our own covers.

I looked into a diaper service here in my early research. It was also prefolds only. Also, it was almost as expensive as buying sposies. It was actually cheaper in the long run to buy nicer diapers and wash them myself. It's been pretty easy so far and I'm glad I chose this route!
