Short cervix at 29 weeks

Hey ladies,
At our 20 wk ultrasound, they were concerned about the attachment of the umbilical cord to the placenta - they said it was not optimal and that could effect the baby's growth. So yesterday I had a growth ultrasound at 28w6d. Baby is growing well! But they said my cervix is on the short side of normal, which they did not see at the 20 wk US. Also, I have never felt a BH contraction. Sometimes I will externally touch my bump and feel that it is tight. But I don't feel them internally. Those things combined with my physical, stand on my feet and walk most of the day job, put me at some risk for preterm labor. The dr is going to do a cervical swab tomorrow which will indicate if I'm likely to go into labor in the next two weeks. If that test is positive, I know I will have to go on some sort of bedrest. And we will have another US in 2 weeks to check baby's growth and my cervix again.
Anyone have experience with any of this? It's making me a bit nervous and want to just touch my belly all day to see if I can feel any contractions!

Re: Short cervix at 29 weeks

  • Hey, mama. Sorry for the stress. I'm glad baby's looking good, though! How short is your cervix? Basically if it's very short (like, under a centimeter), there's a very big chance of preterm delivery. If it's, say, 2.25 cm, your chances are still increased, but not a whole lot. Lots of women with a short cervix (most, in factt) go on to have full-term births. But the length does matter.

Take care and rest up. Did they put you on progesterone? That's a very good treatment to help prevent preterm labor in women with a short cervix.

  • I'm glad they are monitoring you closely! Try to rest as much as you can and drink plenty of water, elevate your legs etc... etc... I don't have any experience with this but I would say just be ready in case your baby does come early and make sure to ask your doctor a lot of questions to be properly prepared! Good luck!

  • Sounds like your doctor is very on too of things and that's awesome. Did he say how short? So when they do the swab (fnn) that'll be positive or negative if it's positive stay off your feet but it doesn't always mean preterm labor just means at risk. I tested positive but never had a short cervix and lasted till 31 weeks so there's so many variables .
Stay relaxed try to not worry . Best of luck keep us posted . Prayers and hugs
  • Thanks ladies. I find this whole thing pretty emotional! Hoping for negative results tomorrow. And thinking about restricting my work hours so I can rest more
  • I was 24w4d when my cervix measured 1.7cm put in hospital to monitor baby and give me steroids to develop his lungs if I were to deliver. Discharged to home and have been on progesterone suppositories since then. The ffn will probably come back positive, don't stress. That doesn't mean you willl have the baby in the next few weeks. Just restrict yourself at work. Stay off your feet and when ur home lay on your left side. Even sitting up too long can put pressure on your cervix. I'm now 32weeks tomorrow and the dr's are thrilled I made it this far. It's really hard not to stress, but stay as relaxed as possible. You will be fine!! Ps my SIL had positive ffn tests from 29weeks until she delivered her twins at 36. Just breathe!!
  • No experience just wanted to extend thoughts and prayers!
  • Prays! I know it's difficult not to stress but just try to be positive!
  • Yes! Take a deep breathe!  Hopefully the test will come back negative!  I was having contractions last week @ 30 weeks.  They did a US and my cervix was short as well.  I was told the same thing that I may be at risk for preterm labor etc. and prepared me for the worst.  They did the swap and it came back negative.  The nurse and DR also said that a positive result doesn't exactly mean that your LO WILL come in 2 weeks, but an indication that preterm labor is likely.  (Just my experience)  As hard as it is, try to take a deep breath until you know what the results are. Hopefully everything is ok :) I know its hard to image having your LO so early! I was told to drink lots of water and rest as others said.
