sign language with baby?

Who is using it and when are you starting?

I learned ASL in high school and then went to a university tied with a deaf university so we had a high population of deaf students. I relearned ASL as an employee there to help our students. I would love for ASL to be our family's second language. Although my spanish speaking mom would prefer Spanish...

Re: sign language with baby?

  • I started teaching DS a few signs right around 6 months, the same time I started him on cereal and purees. But we weren't very consistent and didn't push him to use them, so only a couple stuck.

Similar, I am signing simple ones now "mom dad eat sleep" and will add others when she's about 6 months. I have heard great things too. I like this simple chart https://www.babysignlanguage.com/chart/

  • You can start anytime. As a mom of a non-verbal almost three year old, I'd highly recommend signing. We didn't know he would have issues with language at this age.I did signs with him around 5 months, then got lazy and stopped. I regret that. I've since restarted with him and it has helped. I will be starting soon with dd.

  • I have been signing simple ones since she was born and she actually does do the eat one already. It started out as her hitting herself in the face then she moves to hitting her mouth. I felt bad for teaching her it so early because she wasn't able to find her mouth at first and I didn't want her hitting herself but she didn't seem to be hurt by it. Now when I show her the eat sign and ask her if she wants to eat she smiles. I also do all done and more. She knows all done because I say it after she takes her meds so she knows she doesn't have to take any more of that nasty stuff. It has helped a lot because she doesn't fight it as much any more since she knows there's an end.

  • We used it in the daycare I used to work at. Some kids picked it up really well and used it regularly. I would say we started around 4mths and when they were eating baby food they were already familiar with signing and picked it up especially well for food commands. I loved when a baby would sign that they wanted more. It was so awesome that they could convey what they needed. They typically weren't frustrated as easily because they could get their point across. Also, you never know if your child is going to have language/communication issues so why not work on signing just in case. Love it!!!
  • We used it in a daycare I worked at and I love it! Will definitely be using it with this LO. I was a SHAM until my older two were 2 and 3. DD1 had speech therapy for a year because by 3 she only said 5-10 words. She knew and understood them she just refused to talk. Knowing ASL with her would have really helped then.
