Hi I'm type 2 and just now on insulin.. Just wanted to see if someone could give me some advice and pointers... Only 4 weeks and want to do everything I can for my little baby!
I'm a type 2 (going on 5 1/2 years) and tomorrow I'll be 31 weeks pregnant. I wish my doctors had put me on insulin right away, but instead they switched me from metformin to glyburide. That was not fun experience for me, as it gave me very erratic numbers. But my last A1C was 5.6, so the doctors were happy enough. I've been pretty stable since they finally switched me to insulin for the third trimester, which makes me a lot happier. So far my boy has checked out great on every ultrasound, and is growing on schedule.
I was diagnosed as T2 exactly 5 years ago this weekend. I was switched from orals to insulin when we started TTC. The only advice I can give you is strict control in 1st trimester is key. I won't get into details, but I learned this the hard way. By strict control, I mean fastings under 90 and 1-hour under 120. The upside is that insulin sensitivity seems to increase during 1st tri, but you have to watch out for hypos, especially as you get used to being on insulin.
After 1st trimester, you don't have to be as obsessive about it, but control is still very important. In 2nd and 3rd trimester, a healthy placenta will cause insulin sensitivity to decrease, so if your doctor increases your insulin dose, don't beat yourself up. Expect a spike every once in a while, but if you're seeing the numbers creep up over a couple of days, let your doctor know.
