Oh yeah, LOVE ticket to ride! DH and I play over wifi/bluetooth at home on our iPhones. So fun! Download it if you don't have it.
Thinking back to old school games... I used to love "educational" games like Treasure Mountain, where in the world is carmen sandiego, crayola's Magic Wardrobe, and many more I wish I could remember the names of...
I also loved playing pokemon on an emulator on my pc. And Theme Hospital (such a classic awesome game, still play sometimes,) and Harvest Moon.
My DH got it on Steam so we can play it there with our long-distance friends. And when we were young, my mom insisted that any video games be educational, so we had tons of those. Pretty sure we had that Treasure Mountain game, Carmen Sandiego, a couple mystery/puzzle-solving types games from a series that I LOVED (can't remember names anymore!), and a couple spelling and math games... Math Munchers maybe? The spelling one slimed you if you got stuff wrong, we played it a ton but I can't remember names!
I like your mom's philosophy. My parents felt the same. If I wanted to play Nintendo/console I had to play it at the neighbour's. All our games were educational until I was a teen.
It shocks me how many let their little kids play games like call of duty or first person shooters in general. It's basically training little shooters. Not cool. Sure most kids can figure out it's not ok to think like that in real life, but it's more worrisome for spectrum kids or kids on behavioural meds IMO. There are tons of fun non-violent games out there.
I agree there are a lot of fun non-violent games but as a gun owner, I can assure you that there is a big difference between shooting a gun in a video game and shooting a gun in real life. I enjoy playing games like COD but I wouldn't allow my child to play it until they were in their late teens. Every game has an age ranking for a reason. If you choose to ignore that then I think, as a parent, it's your responsibility to make a clear distinction between what is real and what is pretend. Especially when it comes to children with violent predispositioned medical conditions. I work with a lot of kids like that and have had many talks with parents about the restrictions on video games. The parents that care and are truly involved with their children will take my advice and the ones that don't care won't. I have more of a problem with them. They let their kids play hours of video games instead of encouraging them to play outside with other kids, and then they wonder why they are becoming so antisocial.
Agreed @Stargirlb. The games we have on our phones for DD are all educational. Endless Alphabet is probably my favorite one of hers. Oh, we do have one where she can make and design cupcakes, but she asked for that one after we had made cupcakes together IRL, so I figure it's okay.
I'm thinking Mario or Kirby might be the most we'll let her play on console for awhile. She plays Super Mario Galaxy with me right now doing the little 2nd player thing, but mostly doesn't do anything because she doesn't get it yet.
I'm against the violent stuff because I don't want her head filled with those images. It's not that I think she'd become violent herself, but I think that it could contribute to nightmares and night terrors some kids are plagued with. Heck, I don't even like playing those games because it stresses me out. My DH likes them, and that's cool, but me... meh.
I wish I could still play right now, but my nausea prevents it. I've been dying to play Fallout: New Vegas again.
Before I became pregnant, we would play Katamari Damacy or Lego Rock Band and let DD hit the drums. She loves it. I'm kind of sad that we both have been so exhausted we haven't had time to let her play again.
I went through this phase when Super Mario Brothers came out in 2009 or 10? It was my crack, but then I graduated Nursing school and had to put the controller down to go to work :-)
I just got done playing through the Mass Effect trilogy on Xbox 360. Best game ever. We just bought the Xbox 1, which my hubs has completely taken over. I also love The Sims, but my current obsession is Civilization 5 because I really enjoy invading countries. We should all be happy, and very grateful, I'm not the president.... Just sayin....
Lol @turtlemobile2! I always play Civ to try to win the Space Race! People like you frustrate me when I have to build a few armies just to keep my cities from being invaded!
@musicgal05, Ha! See when I first started playing I was very diplomatic, but after being invaded time and time again, I was like, alright, you wanna play that way? I'll show you whats up. @Stargirlb Civilization is a super fun game, but very addictive. But really, aren't all games? The other night I was being attacked by Siam and Greece AT THE SAME TIME! and I was getting so frustrated because I had to split my resources in half and I was getting slaughtered. Mean while my poor hubs made a beautiful steak dinner and had set it up on the patio for us. He came in to get me and I was like "What's wrong with you!!?? I'M IN A WAR! There's no time for eating!!!"
Exactly @turtlemobile2! That is the one game that gets me addicted for hours on end! It's why I hesitate to play too many other games, like Minecraft... that's one of those games that seems to never end, but my DH is always wanting me to play it with him...
I'm just terrible at the militaristic approaches... guess I'll just have to try it out a few times and die in the process until I can figure out some good strategies!
I haven't tried Civilization V either - is it good? I am definitely finishing the newest Walking Dead episode tonight - husband has hockey so I can have the Xbox to myself I'm very excited for The Sims 4 - less than two months now!
