Re: Clothes

  • We live in Texas so there aren't really 4 seasons. So far I have been buying clothes twice a year, but I try to get things that will transition. In the "fall" I got pants, long and 3/4 sleeve tops, and cardigans. For summer, I got shorts, skirts, tanks, and tees. She should be able to wear some or the tanks and tees with pants and cardigans from last winter. Theoretically.

  • I'm also in Texas and do the same as TJ. I do a lot of T-shirts that can be covered with a jacket the few weeks it gets cold enough for that. As for bed, probably still not what you may need but H wears the t-shirt/shorts or pants combos from Target. It never gets cold enough that he needs more than that.

  • I will usually try to catch sales as one season is ending and another is beginning (grab summer clothes at Memorial Day sales, fall at back to school/ Labor Day). I have a personal policy not to buy anything for them that isn't on sale since I have to buy 2x as many clothes. I once tried to buy several seasons ahead, but got screwed when their growth slowed down around 12-18 months and all the things I had were too big. Now, I wait.

Last fall, we used footed, zip up pjs with the grippers on the feet. We did the fleece ones in the colder months since they were too young to deal with real blankets. This year, we will probably use the Carter's two piece sets with a long sleeved shirt and pants. We also put socks on them. I'm hoping to keep them in their cribs for as long as possible and they'll kick of blankets now.

  • The fall bedtime thing is a good question. We still haven't put anything in the crib with him - no animals, blankie, etc. He'll be 18 mo when it starts cooling off here, when is that stuff ok? Last year we just used sleep sacks and different weight footie PJs depending on whether it was cool or cold.

  • G is two and we have used blankets for a while too. We don't have seasons here either (southern California), but we have the A/C on most of the summer so he sleeps in pants and a shirt almost year round. I also buy new stuff closer to his size changes, otherwise I'm not sure if things will fit.

  • I was really lucky b/c my friend sent me 2 boxes of her son's clothes, and another friend also gave me a huge bag of clothes.  Between those, I barely had to buy anything for M for the first 2 years.  Now I realize we don't have any hand-me-downs beyond 24m/2T, so I will have to start buying clothes for this Fall.  Because I didn't have to buy much clothes, I mostly waited until the actual season before buying, because I never quite knew what size M would be in.  He is now 21m but he was wearing 12m shorts up until a month ago!

I am meeting a Craigslist seller tomorrow to see her lot of 18-24m/2T fall/winter clothes.  I pretty much plan to buy all his clothes 2nd hand - either via CL or at resale shop.  Once in a blue moon I'll buy him something on clearance at Target or Old Navy.  I just don't believe in spending much $ on his clothes which he'll only wear a few months and get them dirty all the time.  Oh, and the fact that he's a boy means people care less about what he wears compared to a girl.

I shop at the end of each season for the next year's clothes. So far it had worked sizing wise. L is very warm all the time so we switched him to two piece long or short sleeved pjs with pants once winter was over. I am thinking we will keep this throughout the fall and maybe even winter bc we have a wood stove and our house is plenty warm in the winter.

  • I just wait for the Carter's sales and buy up. In SoCal the seasons don't really exist. We do long pants and short sleeve tops in Summer, Fall will just be long sleeve tops. Winter the heater is on a bit so it will not be much more than that and LO cannot west micro fleece as he gets a rash. I want to buy up now for next summer but worried that 2T will not fit as he is already wearing 18 month clothing and he is just over 14 months old.

We have a consignment sale here twice a year too so I will shop there. I sell too, so the $ we get for the sale goes into shopping for the next season.

  • J has a gaggle of grandmas who are obsessed with buying girl clothes. So I haven't had to buy much of anything.

Not knowing that this would continue past the cute baby stage, I've sniffed out some other opportunities. An organization I volunteer with does an annual rummage sale in February. At $1 per item or set (if matching) I took a risk and got a bunch of sizes that would take me through next February. They also had a few good pair of shoes and socks.

We are in the southwest, so nothing chilly about the weather here. I'm still putting her in a long sleeve onesie with a sleep sack. I would image that will continue until winter when we will likely switch to a lightweight micro fleece footsie. J sleeps with a blankie. However, she also sleeps in a bed, not a crib (so more room to move around or away).

I'll wait until the end of summer to shop for fall clothes, especially since he's bound to get some fall clothes for his birthday in a few weeks so that will determine how much stuff I need to get.  He also has a big tub of hand me downs from my SIL so there will be some stuff he can use in the fall.

For bed, DS wears 2 piece long sleeve PJs with socks or lightweight footed PJs in the fall.  He goes to bed with a blanket on but that usually only lasts about halfway through the night.

  • I also buy clothes twice a year, I usually wait until there is a 40%+ off sale at Carter's/Baby Gap/Old Navy in the beginning of the season (I've just started purchasing some fall/winter clothes). G is so tiny that I have hesitated buying the next size up (she still fits in 9-12 month clothes at 16 months).

For fall and winter G sleeps in a footed sleeper (I like Carter's the best) and the Baby DeeDee sleep sack, it was expensive but so worth it for New England winters, plus her room gets very cold. I'll start offering her a blanket this winter (she'll be around 20 months) but I know she won't know to keep it wrapped around her all night long so we'll still rely on the sleep sack.

  • I honestly buy clothes in advance but not knowing how my children will fit the clothes in a few months considering they were born the same month and completely different sizes  I can't do that anymore. So for toddler I only buy pants with the tabs inside so he can wear the pants longer and they will fit and the baby I haven't purchased anything since he is in the other lo's hand me downs. Thank god I have two boys so I just have to buy for the toddler these days unless it's a special occasion.

  • My MIL buys his essential seasonal clothing, and I fill in as needed. We are pretty short so he could still get away with wearing 6-12 month pants so unless he grows a ton in the next 2 months, all of his 12-18 month pants will fit throughout the fall. I only intentionally buy pajamas for him in advanced when I see them on sale.

This. Then I fill in the next year between hand me downs and sale stuff.

Even in the summer it usually cools down considerably at night, so in the fall we are back to long sleeve/pant jams. (I'm a sucker for the button up with a collar ones.) I'll start in with the fleecey footed jams in the fall too.
