help need healthy food advice!...

I've always been a healthy eater before I got pregnant. However, being pregnant has unleashed the junk food junkie with in.  After 3 months of my poor eating habits I've decided that the reason that my pre-pregnancy jeans dont really fit is not because of my belly but because of the weight I've gained in my hips/thighs from all the not so healthy food.

I just ordered a prenatal yoga dvd and am trying to eat better.  But now that I'm in my 2nd trimester I'm hungry all the time and am looking to get some suggestions as to what to keep in the house that is satisfying but good for me and baby.  I dont want to risk going having preclampsia or gestational diabetes later on in pregnancy because of my poor eating habits.

I'm willing to stock my fridge and cabinets with anything.  What do you girls do to keep hunger at bay in a healthy way?

Thanks so much!

  • Gaining on your hips and thighs is part of being PG for most body types. Eatting poorly will not cause Pre-E or GD. It is a function of your body (not what you do or don't eat), however the effects are lessened if you eat right and have one of those.

I am a strong believer that if your body craves something it is for good reason. I recommend eating heavy meals. Steak with potatoes and veggies, Burgers with coleslaw, burritos, etc. If you try to chase away craving with carrots, celery, and cucumbers all day long you will most likely just binge later.  Heavier healthy snacks, yogurt, bananas, oatmeal.

  • Also, foods that are high in protein are very good for you and baby, will stick with you longer! I ate lots of yogurt, apples with peanut butter, nuts, cereal/ milk, and meat (chicken, beef or fish) with potatoes.

  • I didn't have the best eating habits during my pregnancy and everything was fine. One thing I did do was drink a TON of water. At least a gallon a day.  Seriously. Water helps with everything. Make a few small changes and it will do a lot of good.

  • I eat a lot of:

fat free cottage cheese (good plain or with pineapple),?low fat string cheese,?whole grain toast with (pasteurized) ?goat cheese,?apples, pears (comice pears are in season and delicious) oranges, kiwis, bananas,?raisins, unsulphured/unsweetened dried mango (from trader joe's)?low-salt cashews, walnuts, almonds,?celery with peanut butter, cream of wheat, oatmeal, bran flakes,?Cascade Fresh yogurt (they're sweetened with fruit juice instead of sugar) broccoli, artichokes (the hearts, canned, are great in pastas, on pizza, in salads, or straight from the fridge :)?

?When I'm feeling junk-foody I have some pirate booty or pretzels, a few jelly bellys, a cup of cocoa, or some toast with jam.

And I have been drinking a ton of milk.

    Good luck! :)?

  • Oh, and my pre-preg jeans totally don't fit anymore either. That baby has got to go somewhere!! I figure I'd rather have my hips stretch out, though, than my ribcage... much more helpful in the long run. :)
  • Well that is certainly true! Thanks every one Big Smile
  • I agree with the PP. Putting on weight in the hips and thighs is your body laying in supplies for the baby and for breastfeeding. I have eaten very well on the whole throughout my pregnancy and have exercised and am waiting to hear if I have gestational diabetes, so it's certainly no guarantee. Maybe you can try having a small amount of whatever you are craving? I agree that trying to substitute super-healthy food for what you really want probably won't work well. But you could certainly pair healthier things with the less-healthy things, assuming you aren't having any issues with nausea. And drinking water or milk, like others said, is always good. Good luck!

  • Foods in high fiber are going to fill you up, I just discovered fiber one pop tarts.  5grams of fiber in them and low in calories and fat.  Also fat free popcorn (go for the kettle corn version if your looking for sweet) and if its salt you crave I get edamame in the frozen section of costco and I pop that in for 3 minutes and lightly salt it and its a yummy treat!

  • Oh one more thing go for fat free sorbet or gelato!  So yummy!

  • I've been keeping our kitchen stocked with cottage cheese, yogurt, Total cereals, NutriGrain bars, canned soup, fruit, eggs, wheat bread, peanut butter & jelly, Odwalla Superfood and V8. ?I eat most of my dinners at work (where, luckily, they will cook me whatever I want, and the options are essentially endless), but I find that having all the above stuff around the house keeps me from eating crap at home.
