January 2014 Moms

Just imagine ...

Here in england we have a Remembrance Day today . 1. World war started 100 years ago ! I tried to imagine what it must have been like to be a mum and having to look after little ones in such times. ( not to mention all the horror that goes on in a war) those women were just heroines. Lots of them were completely alone. And lots never got their husbands back sadly . I am not sure how long I would have lasted out in such a situation . That's just what I have been thinking about today.

Re: Just imagine ...

  • I hate war. I thought about it today watching the news. It is all about power. I can't imagine being the wife/mother/daughter to a soldier fighting in a war. It is terrible. It is barbaric what is going on throughout the world. My heart goes out to those in a military family.

  • We had the 100th anniversary day, too. Its hard to imagine being a mother and trying to protect your children while bombs are going off all around you and death is everywhere. We who have grown up in America are lucky because there have been very little attacks on our "home front," and we don't have to think about such things too often.

My city has been shut down twice since Tino was born because left-over bombs from WWI and WWII were discovered during road construction. The Rhine near my home still has concrete barriers to protect from invasion. The house we are moving into had the words "SS forever" carved into a beam (we sanded that out of course). For people in Europe The Wars didn't happen somewhere far away and then disappear into a text book--they happened in their cities, in their homes, and in their families. With all these memories of war around, its hard to simply forget or not imagine what will happen when the next war happens.

  • I read a really great book on WWI a couple years ago -- To End All Wars, by Adam Hochschild. Just a recommendation for anyone interested in learning more.

    Thanks

I bet you would surprise yourself. I am in total agreement that those women were heroines and amazingly strong, but I also think they were normal, typical mothers in an incredibly difficult and scary situation, who dug deep and did what they had to do to survive and try to protect their families. Hopefully none of us ever have to test whether we have that strength inside, but I bet we would if it came to it.

Yes you are making a very good point. I have had stuff going on in life where I thought : forget it you never gonna manage. But suddenly, when you in a certain situation you do develope some extra strength and surprise your self !! But still to be a military wife ... Boah , respect is not even the word !
