Yogurt

Has anyone started their LO's on yogurt yet? If so what did you give them?

We eat a lot of yogurt but it's all labeled as low-fat and has more sugar then I would like her to have yet. I have seen the Gerber Yogurt Blends with the other baby food but it's at room temperature so I'm not sure if it's really yogurt.

Re: Yogurt

  • I'm planning to do the Stonyfield Yobaby yogurt when we start.

Here's some information by Dr. Sears I found helpful since there are so many options out there.

  • I gave DS a spoonful of yogurt (YoBaby) and he seemed to enjoy it. @itsmeally I think the reason is because it's made of cow's milk, but if you Google around, cheese and yogurt are fine before 12 months, doctors just don't want parents replacing formula or BM with straight cow's milk before a year. But dairy products are OK.

This is what I've found as well. I've also read that cow's milk has higher levels of lactose compared to yogurt, and the higher levels of lactose can cause gastrointestinal issues. I'm not going to start yogurt until I speak with DS's Dr., but I wanted to get some info before I asked.

Edited to add: I'm laughing at myself right now for how much effort I put into researching yogurt information for my DS, when I grew up on a farm and drank milk straight from the bulk tank, unpasteurized!

We do yobaby too and LO loves it! I got the ok from my pedi to start yogurt at 6 months. She said to buy whole milk yogurt so I could have bought any brand/flavor yogurt but I liked the yobaby ones so went with those for now.

  • Pedi said we could introduce some baby yogurts if we wanted to at the 6 month appointment. I'm going to wait a few more weeks though, probably around 8 or 9 mos.

  • We do yobaby. He loves the blueberry flavor. It smells TERRIBLE when he spits up though.

  • We started with Yobaby yogurt as well. I haven't seen any other baby brands, though, and greek yogurt is way too tart for DD. @itsmeally they recommend holding off on milk till one year so people don't start giving their babies milk instead of BM or formula before then. Dairy products are ok, though.

  • Thanks for the input everyone. I'll have to look for the YoBaby when I'm at the store.
  • My dr had me start yogurt for the probiotics. He told me to get Activia.
