TTC after 35

Intro - Turning 35 while TTGP *warning loss/triggers*

Hello! I intro'd on the TTGP board finally and today during some discussion with DH thought well, might as well broach the subject, but thought I would bring it here first. I hope I'm not breaking any unspoken rules.
I will be turning 35 in October, that will be month/cycle five of us trying. From everything I know it's generally one year for anyone under 35 TTC before contacting an RE, but 6 months of trying after 35. Soooo...which should I go with here as a rule of thumb? I mean if by November we still are getting BFN's should we just keep trying or should we make an appointment?

DH: 33
Cycle/Month: 3/3
CD/DPO: 25/not sure, haven't started temping yet.

I hope I didn't upset anyone by not being 35 quite yet and posting here.

  • Makes sense. I do have some issues to contend with, which is why I asked.
Without long winded details they include medically necessary termination 12 years ago and a LSIL(low grade precancer) pap 5 yrs ago. Got the all clear the last two years, no LEEP required two cone biopsies the first year. Family history of ovarian and uterine cancers. Testing done two years ago for both with clean results so far.

  • I agree with @IFinTN about temping. If your not sure if and when you ovulate, your timing could be way off. I would also go on amazon and get some wondfos to help also. Get a fertility friend account and start charting. Hopefully you will then get your BFP before your year is up.
    Good luck.
Oh and you are more than welcome here.

TTC #1 with IUI and donor sperm
First IUI May, 2014, Clomid + Trigger = BFN
Second IUI July, 2014, Clomid + Trigger = BFN
Third IUI Dec, 2014, Femara + Follistim + Trigger = BFN
    Fourth IUI Feb 2015, Femara + Follistim + Trigger = C/P :(

  • Welcome and best wishes!  Personally I'd begin temping/charting and call RE to see what they suggest regarding apt time frame after your birthday (that's 3 more months so you'd hit the 6month window then)
  • Temping/charting plus OPK's will help immensely in figuring out your body and knowing if/when you ovulate. It's extremely important when trying to conceive (unless you just want to have sex ever other day your entire cycle - which still won't tell you definitively if you're ovulating).

That being said, I am not 35 yet either (will be August 25th). This is our 8th month TTC #2. This is also my first month going to an RE (on my OB's rec). I had a chemical pregnancy in March and since then, I have a ton of spotting starting 5 days after ovulation, and until my period shows.

PP is right, opening the door to the RE is not fun. It's expensive if your insurance doesn't cover (mine doesn't), stressful, and scary. I wish you good luck, and definitely get to know your body! Fertility Friend is a great website/app and Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great book to read as well. You will learn a TON!

  • I would make an appointment. 6 months of trying to me seems like enough time to go talk to someone. Especially if you are charting, using OPK's and doing everything 'right'.
    GL, and welcome!
  • Welcome!  If you're not sure your timing so far has been great, and don't want to get started with an RE just yet, would just getting some basic testing (HSG, CD 3 bloodwork) from your OB be an option?  That way at least you'll know what your working with.
