Hey all,
As you know from the title of my post, I am a little late to creating a stash. As much as I know the benefits of clothe diapering (all mu siblings and I were) I have no idea how to begin creating a stash for my LO. I hear such conflicting information on how many diapers I need, how many wraps and the differences in brands I am lost. I don't know where to begin. Help!
Re: 31 weeks and have no clothe diapers yet--freaking out
The thing is, there are lots of great diapers these days. You're going to get a different answer from every single person on this board. As long as you stick to name brands you purchase from a real cd store, you will find some you love and some you don't like as much. Stay away from things like zulily.
You might consider a diaper trial.

If it's in the budget, consider getting 30 prefolds and 6 fitteds like green mountain diapers (GMD) workhorses or kissaluvs size 0. Fitteds are great for bleary-eyed MOTN changes. Also depending on what brand of prefolds you get, you might have some sizing decisions. Some brands have like 5 sizes (like GMD and Imagine). Others just have 3, like OsoCozy. You save money getting less, obviously, but as baby first grows into a new size they'll be bulky for a bit. You'll have to decide if that bothers you or not. Covers are similar. Most babies can fit into "bigger" newborn covers like Thirsties Duo size one or Blueberry Mini Coveralls, but they will be bulkier than a true NB cover at first. On the flip side, baby can wear them longer.
My favorite covers are the assunta covers, but I like thirsties too for the similar two size system.
You need 36 prefolds for nb, 24 for OS. I would have at least 8 covers for nb, 6 for OS. You could probably get by with fewer covers if you had too, but I like to have more than I need. I have more like 10-12 in each size.
