barnyard stink?

Hello! I am new to CD'ing and have been stalking this board for weeks.

I finally got some of my stash on Friday. They are hand-me-downs from my sister. Mostly pockets that have microfiber inserts and some fitteds.

Anyway, they really stink. Definitely barnyard stinky, not ammonia.

This is my wash routine: cold rinse and spin, wash on hot with free&clear tide powder not quite up to the first line for a smaller load, rinse and spin and another rinse and spin. Hard water.

They reek coming out of the wetbag and still smell out of the washer. Even now, they are dry and I can faintly smell it.

Any suggestions? Do I need to strip them? How do I even do that?

They aren't clean. I would do a bleach wash (1/4 cup) then rinse rinse rinse till they don't smell like bleach anymore. Then you might need more detergent going forward.

Do I add the bleach right away or put it into the bleach thing in the washer?

If it doesn't help or doesn't completely get rid of the stink, please come back. Start with the easy solution, but we can troubleshoot more if necessary.

Oh I didn't know this. I only bought this one because all the other tide powders were scented.

The original scented Tide Ultra is highly recommend, also. I don't have any scent left after my final rinse.

Yes, that's what I was looking for but they only had like lavender and summer breeze type scents.

I get a huge box at Costco for $28. They are on sale starting the 7th, $6 off, I think. I have been using the same box for over a year and I use it on regular laundry, too. If you don't have a membership, maybe you know someone who does?

Yeah, still smelled out of the wash. Just faintly though. Then I could still smell them after drying.

I'm only CD'ing her part time as of now (waiting for my GMD order, squee!) so when washing I only used a little bit of detergent on a small wash cycle. There was usually only 8-10 diapers in there.

Did you do a used diaper bleach strip before starting to use them?

No I didn't but I'm doing it now. I got them from my sister who gave them a wash before I picked them up so I just assumed they were okay.

So, I definitely wasn't using enough water with a small load. I bleached washed all my diapers on a medium load, watched it fill and that was just enough water. I only have like 13 changes right now so washing 8-10 diapers in a small load was definitely not enough water.

I was washing everyday because I have so few diapers right now.
