Gut check...is there a better way to handle this?

So, my 3 year old has had terrible behavior lately. Screaming, spitting, hitting, just nasty. We were on our way to brunch at our friends' place and he started acting out when I told him the behavior I expected (no screaming, hitting, or spitting and that he needed to sit and eat when the food was served). He tends to act up a lot around these friends. When he started in the car, I told him if he didn't cut it out I would turnaround and he'd stay home. He continued on, laughing so I turned the car around, got him out and put him in his room, sending hubby and LO off to lunch. Is there any other way to deal? I'm at a loss lately with discipline because nothing seems to work...

  • Thanks! I miss my 2 year old...he acted up here and there but was much easier to redirect. 3 is sooooo challenging. I constantly feel like I am going to loose my shit. I feel like he generally just gives no fucks about what I say...

  • 3 sucks. 4 is a tad better and I'm hoping 5 is great. I think you did a wonderful job by following through with the threat. Good job.

  • Totally agree with you! Hang in there. We are in the same hellish boat. Now that DD is 3.5, it has been getting a little better

  • 3 blows. If I could skip age 3 I would have 12 more kids lol. I would have done the same.
I try to redirect, but I also lay out the expectations... And always follow trough and be consistent. Usually counting to 3 works. Sometimes the punishment if I get to 3 is a timeout or taking away a toy, etc. I usually don't get past 2
  • God I'm not looking good forward to Parenting a 3 yr old again. OP I think you did just the right thing.

  • Thanks all. He cried for 20 mins in his room and then I went to check on him to offer lunch but he had fallen asleep. He slept 2 hours (usual nap) and woke up crying again because he didn't get to go to John and Connie's and because Daddy took Gavin. Hopefully, things will get better if I soldier on and keep consistent.

  • You absolutely did the right thing by following through.  Toddlers are assholes.  Hang in there.
