DH and I just bought our first house and we're having trouble figuring out what we need. It has all of the appliances in it already. What would y'all say are the most essential things we need?
When we moved in to our first house we went out and bought:
Shower curtain Bath mat Pots and pans Dishes Utensils Tv stand Rug (the coffee table kept sliding across the tile) Trash cans for the bathrooms Vacuum cleaner
The in laws gave us ALL their furniture (so they could buy new stuff) and their trash can (gross)
My grandpa gave us cleaning supplies
I went garage saling and would buy some stuff too. Like I bought a little shelf for the downstairs bathroom to hold extra toilet paper and wipes since there were no cabinets.
Buy the cheapest now just to get started and then once settled, you can replace with things more your taste/style. We got a lot of hand me down furniture and after about 5 years, started replacing. Congrats!

Thanks! So far we have pretty much everything for a kitchen from our bridal shower so we're set for that. We're looking for cheap furniture at yard sales currently.
A quality kitchen knife, a good scissors or kitchen shears and a cordless vacuum for daily quick cleaning (like a Dirt Devil or something). The knife because it's one thing you'll use often for meals and I've found that our cheapo knife needs to sharpened constantly and sucks for cutting. It's annoying and I'm looking forward to investing in a Wusthof . The good scissors/shears (not a little kindergarten one) because they come in handy for everything and anything and the cordless vac is nice if you have pets and need to clean up litter, dirt, fur, dust, etc. but don't want to haul out a canister or upright. The rest of the things you need can easily be added over time.
P.S.- Beer. Moving/unpacking/remodeling suck and beer made it much more enjoyable for us.
ETA: Congratulations, BTW, on your home! Hopefully it will be a good experience for you. I loved picking out paint and seeing it really transform a room.

Our first is in Heaven- we said goodbye in September 2012
We just moved into our first house...had been renting a townhouse for 3 years so we had most of what we needed.
Here's my suggestion: Try to get active on your local Facebook garage sale site. I found our upstairs furniture for $200. End tables for $10 and other decorative items that would be so much more expensive if they were new. We did buy a new rug for our upstairs living room because it's hardwood and new carpet for downstairs bc of the same reason. We've been able to reuse some of our curtains and I happened to find curtains for our living room on clearence for $13. We finally have a (large) backyard so a swing set for us was a must, I also found ours on the garage sale site for a crazy good deal. You can also post ISO: in search of to find what you need.
We've tried to save where we can so if something comes up we have some savings.
Tell all your family and close friends that you are moving and see if you can get some stuff gifted to you. We moved last year and we didn't have to buy any furniture, as most of our family was looking to get rid of stuff anyways.
After what you are able to get for free, hit up garage sales for anything you don't get for free. Don't be too picky now; you can always replace things over time.
You will need to buy random little things as well. Plan on spending money on cleaning supplies, storage items, bathroom items, sheets, lawn maintenance, etc.
The first thing we had to buy when we bought was blinds. The first night we stacked boxes in front of the bedroom window )
Second following your area yard sale FB pages, and post ISO (in search of) if you aren't seeing something you're looking for. Also, if there's an Ikea in reasonable distance, you can get tons of affordable stuff there.
Just the basics: utensils, dishes, cups, detergent, dish soap, towels, wash cloths, Lysol wipes, plunger!, vacuum, cutlery, coffee mugs...most were mentioned already....they are just the things that I need on a daily basis! Congrats on your first home!!!!
Most essential like pp have mentioned are bathrooms and kitchen supplies along with cleaning. Then I would rank rooms in order of bedrooms, living areas, dining room, outdoor spaces. You can pick up decor etc as you have wiggle room in your budget but getting your bedrooms set up with furniture and organized gives you somewhere to relax at the end of the day. I also agree with pp about finding furniture etc secondhand but when I first moved out we went and got brand new furniture for all the living areas and it was nice to have that done.
