If you have allergies

I have had allergies for as long as I can remember. I've been on meds since I was 6. I also have asthma. I did allergy shots years ago for about 5 years but got tired of going and just couldn't find the time so I stopped. Since DS was born my allergies have been so much worse! I've been doing the shots again since Oct, but my Dr says you should come when sick or having severe allergy symptoms. That's like every other week for me! I am constantly getting sinus infections and bronchitis. And it seems like at least one day per week my allergy symptoms are severe and I am having some type of symptoms almost daily. Even though I am taking my meds religiously. So bad that I've been taking sudafed in addition several times per week. Which I'm sure I'm building an immunity to and now need to "withdraw" from lol.

Tell me how your allergies have been. What regimen do you follow? Have they been worse over the last year or so?

It's really starting to effect us. I don't want to go outside. Every time I try to clean my allergies get so aggravated. I literally don't even want to move today I feel like shit.

ETA: prob and post and run because we are going to my sister despite my feeling like shit lol ... Life must go on

Re: If you have allergies

  • Allergies are worse this year throughout much of the country. It has to do with the wet winter.

Nose spray (Flonase, Veramyst, etc) work best for me. HEPA air filters, dusting and vacuuming regularly, wash face and hair after being outside in high pollen times. Saline nose spray to flush nostrils.

  • I use a neti-pot twice a day when it is really bad and it helps a bit. I also have to do a combo of Zyrtec, Flonase and Astelin. I also use eye drops as needed and keep some single use saline drops in my purse to flush out my eyes if they feel itchy or dry. Sorry...allergies suck.

Thanks. I try to stay on top of the dusting and vacuuming but I know I should be doing it more. I tried wearing a mask while cleaning but then my nose just ran and it was all hot under it and I felt like I couldn't breathe haha.

I have nose spray and eye drops too :) the eye drops help so much with itching!

I knew you would all say Neti pot. I have it but I HATE it! It's like torture lol. So I don't use it unless I'm really backed up. Mostly I've been more runny and sneezy and itchy than anything else. Oh, and I get random hives now too! How fun!

    ETA words
  • I have bad allergies  - so bad in fact that my seasonal allergies have lead to some food allergies where I cant eat certain raw fruits becasue my body interprets it as eating pollen and causes my throat to swell shut.  I can eat those same fruits as long as they are cooked or processed though so it is not a true food allergy.  My doctor basically joked with my husband that if he ever wanted to off me all it would take is some ragweed and Timothy grass.

They got worse with my pregnancy with my son, but strangely, since this past pregnancy they have been somewhat improved - knock on wood.  My regimen is Singulair, Claritan and Sudefed or Dayquil daily during peak allergy times.  I also use the AC a lot instead of having open windows and try to limit my time outside to short bursts.

Whenever i walk on grass barefoot, or work in the garden I get hives and then I have to add a Benadryl to the above mix.  I also hate the neti pot and even though I know it would help, can not bring myself to use it.

  • I take the same meds @bensmommy518‌, but add in two inhalers for asthma. That is insane about the foods!!!!

I just feel like with prescription meds I shouldn't need the sudafed everyday but I have lately. I'm going to really stay in too of vacuuming and dusting and I'm going to get one of those casings for my mattress and see if that helps. I also pretty much never open my windows, burn candles, or buy fresh flowers... It sucks because I love all of those things! I'm going to bring it up with my allergist. I know the shots helped me in the past but I'm not benefitting from them if I can't go every week because I'm constantly having symptoms :(
  • I take 2 different allergy medications. My allergist has told me to start rotating my allergy medicine because your body can build up an immunity against the medication. I take Zyrtec for 2 weeks, and then Claritan for 2 weeks. The rotating throws your body off so it cannot build up an immunity.

I hear you on this.  It sucks but as my husband reminds me - not breathing sucks worse.  I really miss spending time outdoors and I really really miss fresh apples and peaches.  Maybe in a few years I will be brave and try eating them again.  Epi pen in hand of course.

  • I find that Claritin D works best for me. Not as effective as when it was prescription, but still best. It is basically Claritin & Sudafed, but it works much better then taking them separately. Also, the Flonase is supposed to work best if you take it daily, but I rarely remember.

Otherwise it sucks. I have also developed oral allergies like @bensmommy518. It sucks because the list of fruit that I cannot eat just seems to grow every year.

  • My allergy med is prescription, it's clarinex. I take the sudafed in top of that.

I have sensitive skin too. Bug bites are like massive swollen welts. And I've been getting hives- mostly in my face and neck. Super hot! Lol. Thankfully I haven't had issues with food.

I know I should use nasal spray but I HATE it almost as much as netipot. When I was younger I got addicted to afrin. Seriously fucked me up, when I stopped using it I couldn't breathe through my nose at all for like 3 months. So I try to avoid putting anything up my nose because it just freaks me out lol. Crazy I know.
