Babies: 3 - 6 Months

3 month old crying all the time!

Recently my 3 month old will not stop crying. About a month ago I had to get a babysitter during the day, and I feel like she has regressed so much since then. She's been crying every time she is tired and is just inconsolable. She's not overtired but her naps are only lasting about 20 minutes now. I feel as if I've tried everything and nothing seems to help!

I'm a little confused- if she's only napping 20 minutes at a time, how do you know she's not overtired?  What is her total nap time, and how long is she sleeping at night?  Babies this age need 15-16 hours of sleep total, so if her nap time routine changed with the new babysitter, she could definitely be overtired.

  • If she's only napping for 20 minutes at a time, chances are she's overtired, which could be why she's crying so much.

Try swaddling, room darkening shades and white noise. If she wakes at 20 minutes, try to soothe her back to sleep. Keep awake time to 60-90 minutes max.

If you're concerned about a health issue, bring it up at her 3m well visit.

  • I agree with PPs. How does she sleep with the babysitter. ..and are you sure your babysitter is being safe with your baby? It could just be coincidence but I would check that out too. As a baby, I went through my share of neglectful babysitters.

  • My baby was super fussy around then too. He's 15.5 weeks now and has calmed down considerably in the last week. It's all a phase. Make sure LO is getting in her naps.

  • I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it as "just a phase". There may be an underlying cause or something the OP hasn't tried yet which would help. I'm sure we all want to do anything we can to help our LOs!
  • Around that age we discovered DS had silent reflux. Google it and see if you LO has any other symptoms.
