Cloth Diapering

Tight cloth diapers causing excessive spit-up

So .. Colin has always spit up a lot. Like I know babies spit up, but he's had whole bottles worth of milk roll out of his mouth at once (and then I sit at my pump and cry at the waste, since I EP and have to supplement a bit). So we've been trying a few things to fix this before we see our doctor about all of this, since he is gaining weight, albeit slowly.

We've gone to a slower flow nipple and are burping him a bit differently, keeping him vertical after meals, etc. The other night my husband commented that his cloth diaper seemed really tight. It didn't seem too tight to me, I mean, it has to hold everything in, but as an experiment Colin spent the day in disposables since even though they are tight, they aren't as bulky at the waist. Well, low and behold he barely spit up at all today, and he also ate like 4 more ounces than he normally does - so I was kind of expecting something big to come out of him after his second full bottle in 2 hours.

So now I don't really know what to do. It's nice to not have him spitting so much up, but we also had to diaper blow-outs  today - which never happen in cloth. I'm thinking if we stick to prefolds and flats with aplix covers the covers can be a bit looser at the waist to help a bit. I don't know, anyone have suggestions/dealt with this before?

Re: Tight cloth diapers causing excessive spit-up

  • I feel like that if your diapers were tight enough to cause your baby to get sick, they were probably too tight.

  • G did go through a phase when learning to sit where certain diapers with tighter bands would cause a rogue spit up when he'd fall forward. But not when he was still not sitting yet, so I wonder if MrsHudson is right about them being too tight??

((Hugs)) on the reflux issues. D had it pretty bad. I would give it another day or two in sposies before you blame it on the CDs though. It could have just been a random good day.

It sounds like you've tried all the usual suggestions to help with it. I assume you're supplementing with formula. Have you tried switching that yet? I think they make types specifically for reflux babies now. Also I know it seems like he's spitting out the whole bottle, but he probably isn't really. 1/2 ounce looks like a TON of milk when it's all over you or baby or the floor. Try dumping that amount of water on your counter.

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone!!

@mrshudson618I think you are right, they aren't too tight, they don't even leave marks at the waist, I'm just grasping for something to explain this darn spit-up!

He was in disposables all day today and still had some spit ups, average for him. I think the flow on his bottles has really been the biggest factor. I put him back in cloth after supper and he's had 3 bottles and no spit ups, so I think I was just being paranoid about the amount. @CLLDLL it's so true that it always looks like a ton when it comes out, but it's probably a normal amount.

I'm going to stick to best bottoms and/or flats for the next couple of days to control the angle he lies down at as @theultimatesak mentioned, we'll see ....

Also @Mapleme I love the idea of the wool. I've really wanted to try some out; I bought some yarn to crochet one and also have pinned some patterns for making wool shorties from old sweaters on pinterst. I think this might be the excuse I need to get moving on those projects.

  • I think if they were that right they would be leaving horrible marks. The angle thing seems maybe more plausible.

  • Does he have any other symptoms other than just the reflux? DS spit up constantly at the beginning too but had other things going on (rashy skin, gross poop, silent reflux, etc). I cut out dairy and soy and it all went away in a few weeks.

No, it's just the spit up. That's why we are we are trying all these things to help improve it because from searching for answers it seems like he has no other symptoms that would explain it was something else and give us more solutions.
