Breastfeeding

refuses the left?

Hi everyone ! My LO is almost 6 months old. All of a sudden he all but refuses my left side and has been since last night. He might suck once or twice but then cries and will happily eat on the other side.

What's going on? What do I do?

TIA

Re: refuses the left?

  • Thanks! He still seems to prefer the right but I have gotten him to eat on the left a few times.

What are signs of an war infection in a baby? Sadly I don't remember.

    Thanks!

  • He was much younger, but my son went on a one-sided nursing strike at 2 months - literally started sobbing when I tried to put him on the right, but no ear infection or anything. I'm fairly certain he made a negative association from trying to comfort him by nursing on that side immediately after his 2-month vaccinations. It was really worrisome because the side he wouldn't eat from is the one that produces about 2/3 of my milk!

I found that if I caught him before he really woke up or in the middle of a nap, and nursed lying down, that I could still get him to eat from my "good" side - we did a lot of skin-to-skin napping and snuggles. I imagine that's probably going to be harder with a 6-month-old, but maybe concentrate on trying to get him to take that side at night? And meanwhile, of course, pump.

It took a little over a week for things to get better, but by two weeks, nursing was back to normal. Good luck and hang in there!
