Baby Names

Too Dark Horse?

edited August 2014 in Baby Names

My H and I are about to start the Embryo Adoption process, and we're already thinking about baby names. We have several girl names but cannot agree on any boy names.

My grandad's name was Noble. I think is a beautiful, strong name, but afraid it's might be too out there.

My son's name is Harrison.

Other boy names I like are Henry (too matchy?), Emmett, Elias, Miles, and though I love Atticus, I wouldn't use it because our last name ends in "us." Thoughts?

*Et update list*

Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
3 failed matches in 2012.
Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

Re: Too Dark Horse?

  • I love Noble! And Atticus
  • I really love the name Atticus Noble. But I think it's just too much with our last name. :(

  • I love both family names and virtue names for boys (see siggy), so I'm sold. If you get a weird look, you've a ready-made explanation: "My grandpa's name *shrug*"

I would not use Henry. Too close.

If you are too nervous, middle name it.
  • I would definitely use Noble as a middle name if you're nervous it will be too much as a first name. Elias Noble or Miles Noble sound great with Harrison.

  • Noble is an awesome family name. I love Atticus, but if that doesn't work I really like Anselm too.
  • I agree Henry is too matchy but I love the rest of the names and like Noble as the middle name, all the names you listed work well as a first name to Noble!!!
  • Thanks for the input!

I'm really liking Elias Noble, but my H is on the fence. And he "doesn't really like Miles."

  • What about Hensley for a girl? It's H's pick, and I think it's pretty, but worry it sounds "made up." We found it in an actual baby name book, and it's a fairly common surname. We obviously like surnames as first names. :)

    I agree. I wouldn't use Noble as a FN.

  • I think Noble would make a great MN; I really like the family connection. It seems as odd pair with Harrison on its own though. Emmett, Elias, and Miles all sound fine with Harrison.

There was a post the other day about why Henry and Harrison would not make a good sibset due to similarity.

Thanks for the info! Found it.

Turns out my H isn't a fan of Henry anyway.

Henry is too match with Harrison because Harrison means "son of Harry" and Harry is an old form of Henry.  They are match because they are very close to being the same name.
    Andplus, William Henry Harrison.
  • I don't really mind Noble as a fn. It is definitely growing on me quickly and I don't think it sounds bad with Harrison.

Harrison is also our top boy pick...it's a family name.
    Other names from my list:
Hugh...I think it may be fine with Harrison...
    Garrett
    Brett
    Rhett
    Beau
    Evan

  • I figured I'd post here rather than make a new discussion post.

My grandad named Noble was married to a Dorothy (my Mamaw Dot who passed when I was little). How do y'all feel about Dorothy as a fn?

  • I love Noble. Considering it was your grandpa's name, I don't find it the least bit weird at all!

I also love Emmett and Miles. I think Henry is too matchy with Harrison.

  • I think noble is a great name. The only thing I would worry about is nick names. Nobe? Doesn't sound to good to me lol

As for Dorothy. I don't like it personally but it's a good name and I love the nick name dot for a little girl.
