PCOS and Miscarriage Risk-Nervous

I am currently 5 weeks pregnant. I conceived using Femara. I had some light brown spotting at 3 weeks 6 days (day after BFP), so I went in for a beta HCG. Levels rose from 88 to 212 in 48 hours and progesterone on the 1st draw was 47. Doctor said all of this is great. I am having an ultrasound next week to check for viability. I have been doing some research about PCOS and early miscarriage and some stats I have read said the risk can be as high as 50%, while other studies show it is only slightly higher than "normal" women. Does anyone know what the actual risk is? I guess it doesn't really matter because my body will do what it is going to do, but I am so nervous. This will be my first child and in the back of my mind I am really not expecting this pregnancy to last because it feels like my body never does what it is supposed to do. Sorry to be a debbie downer. I appreciate all of your feedback. Good luck to all of you.

Re: PCOS and Miscarriage Risk-Nervous

  • Congratulations!

That said, stay away from google!

I don't actually know what the increased risk is, if any. I would ask your RE/nurse that one.

I'm assuming you are on progesterone. If you are using crinone or vaginal suppositories, that can irritate your cervix and is a pretty common cause for spotting early on.

  • Thank you! I'm actually not on progesterone. My doc was happy that mine was so high on my own. I will definitely ask about the risks. Thanks again
  • That's a great P level! My guess is the spotting may have been implantation spotting that just took a while to come out.

Remember, spotting early in is very common for lots of ladies! Best of luck to you!

Congrats! Never heard about that risk. I have PCOS and I am insulin resistant and after my first IUI with stims it made the lining of my uterus really low and they thought I would have a hard time holding the baby but all turned out fine. Did progesterone vag and for my second did a different stim to avoid the thin lining and again did progesterone and estrace and all turned out well. I also had spotting throughout the whole first tri. Good luck!

  • Well when I was going through everything my RE told me I was around 50% miscarriage rate but that it drops to an average number after seeing the heartbeat. PCOS is usually early loss. I had 3 losses but they were all very early, like never making it the 6 week ultrasound. I ended up using progesterone cuz of my losses, but if yours looks good don't worry. It's really hard in the beginning, I totally get that. Good luck!

  • I don't know what the risk would be but here's what I've learned about odds - it doesn't really matter because when you fall on the wrong side of them that's just one more thing to get angry about.

Congrats on your pregnancy and I agree with @kmc84 - stay off of google.  Seriously.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
