Toddler hitting

I have an actual parenting question lol.

DS is 16 months. When he doesn't get his way he hits himself in the head or face. Not hard but it's like his way of letting me know he is pissed. It's been happening for a few months but seems to be more often and now is hitting other things. I know DD did this too but usually would just hit her arm. I just let the dog out and he was pissed he couldn't go out too so he hit his face, then his head, then the table, then the chair, then his head again. Each time he hit I said "we don't hit" and/or "do nice to DS". Then I redirected. He does this when something he shouldn't have gets taken away, when DD takes something, etc.

Does it seem like he is doing it excessively? I try to say no and redirect when he does this. Any other advice?
