Question for dog owners...

do you brush their teeth?!
Every time I take my dogs to the vet they strongly recommend it and I start to feel neglectful.  I'm sorry but I can't even imagine being able to do that.  They're small hyper little boogers.  I do give them dental chews/treats...

Re: Question for dog owners...

  • We didn't, but now wish we did. Our oldest dog just had $1,300 worth of teeth pulled, and teeth cleaned. Needless to say, we bought a tooth brush, and tooth paste for our dogs after that. We brush them 2-3 times per week.

  • I brush daily.  We have greyhounds, who have notoriously bad teeth, and to stave off an annual dental, I brush religiously.  On the one dog I use a regular enzymatic toothpaste, but the other one's teeth are worse, so he gets a special maintenance gel and a spray.  I used to think people who did this were crazy, but those dentals are pricey and going under anesthesia makes me worry.  We adopted them when they were 4, so they weren't used to having their teeth brushed, but they quickly got used to the routine.

Hm...looks like I'll be brushing their teeth after all.
One of my dogs is very nippy when his bubble is invaded, so I'm really not sure how it'll go with him...  This will be an interesting learning process, and entertaining to watch I'm sure.
    Thanks for the responses everyone

  • Nope... and every time she take her to the vet, they remark about how good her teeth look.

Try just letting him lick the toothpaste (chicken flavored, of course) off the toothbrush to begin with.  Once he understands it's something he'll enjoy, hopefully he will relax a bit.

Echoing PP that dental work for our old dog was $$$$$.  Wish we had brushed more religiously with him.

  • We brush twice a month and each dog gets a dental chew every day.
  • I brush daily as a part of their daily groomin. I do not do any dental chews since those are hard on stomachs and have been known to kill dogs. I do give the dogs raw marrow bones and those really help with their teeth.
