Sugar water for immunizations

I know that we all have varying opinions of whether certain shots are necessary, etc. I am curious who has used sugar water on a pacifier during/after their LO gets shots. We have our 2 month well baby appt In a few hours. DH says it's ridiculous but I'm wondering if anyone has experience??

Re: Sugar water for immunizations

  • It was offered when my baby had to undergo various tests at children's hospital at 6 weeks. We were there for 6 hours and I couldn't hold or comfort him b/c it would interfere with the diagnostics. It helped him greatly but I also found putting BM on paci also calmed him down. He doesn't do pacifiers often, but it's so worth a try!

  • Our babies got it for their first Hep B shots- it's standard in our NICU apparently. They didn't get it for their 2 months and those were over so fast anyways.

  • Has anyone made the concoction at home?

  • They did with my LO at the hospital when they drew blood for the jaundice test. I heard it helps to distract them. When my LO got her hep B shot at her one month appt, her pedi told me to feed her right after... I waited until we got home and it was a bit of a mistake. She was crying and fussing the whole way. Next week at her appt i think i will bring a bottle and possibly the BM on the paci too. I would cry too if i need to get 4 shots in one appt.
  • In the past I always just nursed immediately afterwards. I'd try the sugar water if they recommended it.

  • I ended up dipping the paci in breast milk...now we are cuddled up on the couch trying to ease the ouchies. Any tips for helping LO feel better after shots?
