TTM about The Outlander Series

Let me tell you a little about my reading history.  I'm pretty much all over the board in genres. I just finished All Souls and I'm looking for a new series or book to read.   I like fictional, historical murder mysteries, Pitt, Monk series(Anne Perry), Gaslight series (Victoria Thompson) Bess Crawford Series (Charles Todd). I devoured Harry Potter, I've read all the books by David Eddings (Fantasy) I loved the Dragon Tattoo series, Kathy Reichs (Bones, but the original books that show is based from)

So from my list does do you think I'd like The Outlander Series, or do you think it might be too far out field?

Re: TTM about The Outlander Series

  • Lurker but I love the Outlander series. It is by far one of my favorite and I have read it to many times to count. I am into historical fiction and have not read any of the books you list so I cannot make a good comparison with those. The Outlander series is a focused on a woman who travels back  in time. The series has a lot of great points and subtleties. It has loose romance undertones (she has to choose between two men, one in the past and one in the present). It also has actions (witches, time travel, fights, escapes) which make it exciting. It also has realistic struggles with emotions, events, and people. I feel like everyone can relate to something in the book which really makes it a good read. The TV series is getting ready to air on starz (Aug 9th). Check out the trailer, it does an amazing job at portraying the book.

  • @bookitup The second book is my least favorite of the series. I love the beginning and the end of the book. The middle was so long and drawn out that I tend to skim through it. I know the writer is going for the politics of the time but I find it boring as well. The third book in the series is amazing and I think it rivals the first one.
  • I am all over the map, but read mostly historical fiction and scifi, I love the beginning of the series, have read them multiple times, and the series is up in there in my favorites. I have cooled a bit with her latest books, but there is still thousands of pages of good reading.

There are a lot of triggers in the books though. But if you like the Dragon Tattoo series I doubt it will put you off the books.

  • Thanks ladies!  The first book is in my ebook library wait list.  I'm 56 out of 56 waiting, and there's only one ebook available.  LOL

Wss ^ I've also found I have to wait a good bit in between re-reading the series or I end up skipping a lot.  My husband's grandmother clued me into these books and I passed them on to my friend, we have endless conversations about these series.  I kinda wish I had cable to see the series.

  • This is my all time favorite series.  I don't think you will be disappointed with the first book.  It is Ahh-mazing!!  The 2nd book was very hard to get through - so much politics, I still think it needs to be read.  Her books are so dense, you would miss too much if you skipped a whole book.  Skim it!!

I am currently re-reading the series, listening to book 6 right now.  It's the first time I've listened to a Gabaldon book, it took a little getting used to but I'm loving listening to it on my commute home from work!!

I cannot wait for August 9th!!!  (It's my DS's 2nd birthday AND Outlander!!)

  • Have any of you Outlander fans read her novellas?  I just read the story about Roger's parents - very interesting!  And I cannot remember the 2 men from An Echo in the Bone!  Almost to that book again.  :)

I love Outlander. I'm working through the latest book now--it's taking me a while because I have limited time to read each day. I read all of the novellas while I waited for this last book to come out. I really enjoyed the focus on Lord John.

I'm waiting to read the latest book until I finish re-reading the last 2.  It's so hard to wait, but so much happens in these books that I need a refresher!
